Big money for the homeless

Nearly 800 of Central Florida’s government, business and philanthropic leaders rocked with a purpose to the music of Florida rock band Sister Hazel at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida’s Hearts of Gold event on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The event, held at B. B. King’s Blues Club at Pointe Orlando, raised over $230,000 for the Coalition’s programs and services throughout the year, ever more important as the number of homeless families with children increases. The highlight of the evening was the concert by Sister Hazel. Not only did Coalition supporters feel up close and personal in B. B. King’s intimate setting, but the band proved to be particularly personable and supportive of the Coalition’s mission to transform lives. They were, after all, named after the real Sister Hazel Williams, a Gainesville missionary who ran a homeless shelter.
