Boy Scouts need trailer

Due to recent growth in membership, Boy Scout Troop 931 needs help raising funds to replace its borrowed12-foot single-axle cargo trailer with a 16-foot cargo trailer with dual axes. In addition, the troop needs $350 per scout for summer camp this July. Call 321-765-4029 or email [email protected] for more information on how to raise money for the troop.

JFS feeds 513 families

In the process of helping 513 families in 2012, Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando volunteered 7,000 hours, provided 72,740 meals, served 412 children, and delivered 32,000 pounds of food.

Reuniting 500 pets

2012 was a year of milestones for Winter Park Lost Pets, as it reunited its 500th pet – including its first turtle – microchipped more than 175 pets for free, and coordinated the first Winter Park Dog Walk. Visit winterparklostpets.com for more information.

Mica gets new chair

On Jan. 3, Congressman John L. Mica, R-Winter Park, was named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. In addition, Mica will also retain his Transportation Committee assignment, and serve as one of the most senior leaders on that important national infrastructure panel.

Dinner already sold out

The city of Winter Park’s 12th annual Dinner on the Avenue, scheduled for Saturday, April 20, is sold out. After receiving an overwhelming response, 150 tables sold just two hours after they went on sale. More than 1,200 patrons will experience the fun and excitement of this annual event, which has become Winter Park’s social event of the year.

Deans lister

Gaby Lugo of Maitland was named to the fall 2012 Dean’s List at Berry College. To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better. Located near Rome, Ga., Berry challenges more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students to embrace a firsthand education that unites strong academic programs with opportunities for meaningful work experience, spiritual and moral growth, and significant service to others.

Clemson grad

Andrew Robert Barker of Winter Park graduated from Clemson University on Dec. 20, with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Barker was among 1,200 students who received degrees at two graduation ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Feeling Minnesota

Christina Shaffer, a resident of Winter Park and student of The Masters Academy, has been admitted to Concordia University, St. Paul for the fall 2013 semester. Shaffer was awarded the President’s, Lutheran Heritage and Church Vocation scholarships.
