Rollins students jump into community

At Rollins College, first year students got to work immediately by participating in SPARC (Service Philanthropy Activism Rollins College), a day when all incoming students contribute their time to community service projects throughout Central Florida. Students worked with 26 different community organizations throughout Central Florida, including Fern Creek Elementary School and A Gift For Teaching.

Rollins re-opens renovated library floor

The Olin Library at Rollins College reopened the second floor of the library after renovations. The renovation began in May after about two years of planning, which included student input on layout, furniture and learning needs. St. Margaret Mary in Winter Park will have a 5K to benefit Haiti missions on Saturday, Oct. 26. Registration is due by Saturday, Sept. 15. To register or for more information visit StMargaretMary.org/Halloween5k.html

Wal-mart expands Breakfast in the Classroom

Breakfast is available to more students across the country at no charge thanks to the expansion of Breakfast in the Classroom, a program funded by the Wal-mart Foundation. The expansion will build on the first year’s success in five school districts by expanding to 10 new districts, allowing for more than 70,000 students to receive breakfast in the classroom.

Local students honored

Berklee College of Music announced that Drew Moore of Winter Park has earned placement on the Dean's List for the spring semester of the 2012 academic year.

Darrick Loftus of Winter Park took the first step in becoming a Boilermaker by participating in the annual STAR program at Purdue University's West Lafayette campus.

Epiphany Place introduces new literacy learning program

Beginning in September, there will be a new option for adults wishing to spend time bonding with infants and toddlers. Souns and Rhymes is a new Mommy and Me class focusing on helping children up to 3 years old explore language and literacy with Souns and nursery rhymes. Souns is a hands-on learning program focused on teaching children phonemic awareness. Learn more at SensAbleLearning.org

Florida Hospital introduces symptom app

Knowing that any illness is stressful, Florida Hospital for Children recently launched a symptom checker app for iPhone called Docs2Go. Currently this is a unique app in Central Florida serving parents needing medical help for their kids. To download Docs2Go for free, search “Florida Hospital for Children” in the App Store.

Volunteer at Center for Independent Living

The Center for Independent Living, a Winter Park-based nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and seniors achieve independence, is offering volunteer opportunities for students and individuals seeking office experience, earning college credit or simply looking to help others. Many students may still be looking to volunteer in the community. Services CIL offers include housing assistance, employment, mental health counseling, deaf services and aging in place.
