Trinity Prep students perform in Scotland

Twenty-six Trinity Preparatory School students left on July 30 for the United Kingdom, bound for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. The Winter Park students will perform “Candide” as part of the American High School Theatre Festival. While in the UK, they will take time to see the sights, attend shows in the West End of London, in Stratford and at the Globe Theatre, as well as participate in acting workshops. They will also attend international performances at the Fringe Festival, returning to Orlando on Aug. 13.

Trinity Prep Class of 2012 graduate Olivia van den Berg said, “The Edinburgh Fringe Festival provides me with not only an opportunity to visit the United Kingdom, which is a place with incredible history that I’ve always wanted to see, but also to perform for one last time alongside some of the most talented actors and actresses I’ve worked with in my career. I’m honored that our production and school were nominated to perform in the festival — it will be a run I will never forget.”

Woman nabs $10K for Holocaust Center

Bright House Networks Vice President of Operations Michel Champagne, from left, USA Network “Characters Unite” award winner Helen Greenspun of Longwood and Fred Haug of NBC Universal show a $5,000 check that Greenspun earned through her selection as a national winner of the USA Network 2012 Characters Unite Awards, given to people who engage in extraordinary efforts to combat prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance in their communities. Bright House Networks matched the $5,000 national award from USA Network, resulting in a total cash award of $10,000 for the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida in Maitland, the charity Greenspun designated to receive the money. She is a holocaust survivor and lecturer who is a member of the board of the Holocaust Center.

Winter Park students honored

• Connor Branham, from Winter Park, was named to the Dean's List at Villanova University for the spring 2012 semester.

• Lilian L. Wu, a resident of Winter Park, has been named to first honors on the Clark University Dean's List.

Summer of Dreams sorts donations

Sponsors, supporters and students from Fifth Third Bank’s Summer of Dreams, a 10-week program for local homeless children, recently volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Food Rescue Center to sort, pack and organize non-perishable food donations. Volunteer at Center for Independent Living

The Center for Independent Living (CIL) — a Winter Park-based nonprofit dedicated solely to helping individuals with disabilities and seniors achieve independence — is offering several volunteer opportunities for students and individuals seeking office experience, earning college credit or simply looking to help others. With the end of summer sneaking up on us, many students may still be looking to volunteer in the community. Volunteer opportunities for tour guides

Orange County Regional History Center,

Feeding children in summer months

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida recently collected more than 6,500 pounds of food during its “Fill the Need” food drive with Second Harvest Food Bank. Residents were encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items, along with their Goodwill donations, to support Second Harvest’s “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” campaign, which helps feed children while school is out during the summer months. Bowl-A-Thon raises $800K

Junior Achievement of Central Florida (JA) recently completed its 29th annual Bowl-A-Thon fund-raiser. More than 8,500 employees from nearly 145 local companies were able to raise nearly $800,000 to help JA provide practical economic programs to 30,000 students in Central Florida.
