Winter Park team in World Series

Twelve girls, three coaches and their families will be representing the Babe Ruth Softball League in the Regional Championships in Greenville, N.C., playing against the best teams in the U.S. The Winter Park team has already been invited to the World Series in Alachua, Fla., in August. Summer of Dreams kicks off second year

Fifth Third Bank’s Summer of Dreams has spirit! That spirit was reflected by the pom-poms in the air for the “pep rally” kick-off at the downtown branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida (BGCCF). Supporters and sponsors gathered to kick off the second year of Summer of Dreams — a program providing homeless students in Central Florida up to 10 weeks of free summer camp, two meals per day, mentoring and school supplies, as well as financial counseling for their parents. Holocaust survivor honored for her volunteering

One of Central Florida’s most active volunteers, Helen Greenspun is being honored by the USA network’s Characters Unite campaign, which identifies leaders in addressing social injustices and bridging cultural divides. Officer saves a life while off-duty

While on vacation in South Florida, Driver’s Mart Hero and Orlando Police Officer Izzy Hernandez rescued a small boy who was drowning in a lagoon. Hernandez performed rescue breathing on the unresponsive child and thanks to his quick actions, the 5-year-old made a full recovery. David Hicks (pictured), also a Driver’s Mart Hero, is among a group of dedicated adult volunteers who promote and support youth sports in Central Florida. As a volunteer board member for the Central Florida Kraze/Krush Soccer Club, he has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships to help families in need participate in the sports league.

A&H museum accepting applications for artist program

The Art and History Museums – Maitland (A&H) announces a call to artists to participate in its 2012-2013 Artist-in-Action (AIA) program. This program provides non-residential studio space to an established or emerging artist for the professional practice and research of fine art. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1.
