Miss Florida returns to UCF as reign ends

Kristina Janolo, the third consecutive University of Central Florida student crowned Miss Florida and former Miss Winter Park, said she learned more about herself than she envisioned she would during her one-year term that came to a close on July 7. She made more than 250 official appearances during the year around the state, Washington, D.C., and other national destinations. Janolo, a marketing major from Kissimmee, was a top-12 finalist last summer at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. She re-enters the classroom as a senior with the goal to one day be the executive director of a nonprofit organization. She is scheduled to graduate in May.

UCF partners with EA Sports

Gov. Rick Scott recently announced a unique new partnership between the University of Central Florida’s Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA) and EA Sports. Designed to create a priority pathway for FIEA graduates into the video game industry, the new EA Sports Innovation Lab at the UCF Center for Emerging Media in Downtown Orlando will allow EA Sports to create additional internship opportunities each year at the facility, where FIEA students will work side by side with industry-leading EA Sports game development professionals to create the latest products on the latest platforms, using the latest tools and technologies.

Vote for Maitland’s parks

Five of the city of Maitland’s parks need your votes in Coca-Cola’s America’s Favorite Parks campaign, which will award recreation grants of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 to the top three parks with the most votes. Ethos Vegan Kitchen is moving to the corner of Fairbanks and New York Avenue this month. Aside from improved parking, the vegan restaurant will be expanding their hours and menu, and migrating to a table service format. They are hiring for various positions. Local residents honored for academic achievements

Troy Douglas Ehlke of Winter Park received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University on Saturday, May 12 at the university's 144th commencement.

Kelly Branham, a resident of Winter Park, was awarded a bachelor’s degree during Providence College commencement ceremonies on May 20.

Andrew Holzhauer of Maitland received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University during commencement exercises on May 21.

The following students were awarded degrees during SMU's May 2012 Commencement ceremonies:

• Emily Bates, a resident of Maitland, received a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance.

• Graham Clark, a resident of Winter Park, received a Bachelor of Arts in film and media arts.

• Sarah Grey, a resident of Winter Park, received a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing.

Boston University awarded academic degrees to 6,098 students in May 2012. Receiving degrees were two Winter Park residents: Brent O. Zwirn, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management, and Lindsay S. Webber, Master of Arts in Teaching in English Education.

The following students were named to the President's and Dean's lists of their college or school at Mercer University for the spring 2012 semester:

• Bryan Danley of Maitland, a senior, was named to the President's and Dean's lists of the School of Engineering.

• Lauren Gassie of Winter Park, a sophomore, was named to the President's and Dean's lists of the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics.

The following local residents were among over 1900 students from Wake Forest University who made the Spring 2012 Dean's List:

• Blake Habicht, a resident of Maitland

• Andrew Holzhauer, a resident of Maitland

Schools in Orange and Seminole counties need volunteers

Junior Achievement (JA) of Central Florida needs volunteers for the upcoming fall semester to teach JA classes in Orange County and Seminole County elementary, middle and high schools. JA mentors educate students about free enterprise, financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. Volunteer opportunities are available at three levels and require about one hour per week for five to seven sessions, depending on the program. A&H accepting applications for interactive art program

The A&H is seeking artists to participate in the 2012-2013 Artist-In-Action program. This program reflects the spirit of founder André Smith’s Research Studio and the current mission of the institution, providing non-residential studio space to an established or emerging artist for the professional practice and research of fine art. This program is a wonderful opportunity to interact with A&H’s community of artists and art enthusiasts while working in this uniquely rich and historic environment.
