Tooth fairies on parade

Main Street Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics made its first appearance at the Annual Winter Park Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3. The entire office staff turned out in full holiday spirit with Elf hats and gift sacks, and even had the Tooth Fairy ride in a convertible sending out holiday wishes for bright smiles.

Tiny builders

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, 19 second graders from Jewish Academy of Orlando visited the Habitat for Humanity Winter Park Maitland construction site at 745 Comstock Ave., Winter Park, to breathe life into the lessons they have been learning at school during their Social Studies unit on economics. The students conducted mock inspections of a home under construction, putting mathematical (measurement, money) and Social Studies (what does safe, decent housing provide for a family?) concepts in perspective while utilizing the school’s iPad2s to take pictures and record videos of their findings.

Duby graduates

Jeanette Duby received an Associates of Arts in Divinity from The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville, Florida. She is a member of Killarney Baptist Church in Winter Park, Florida. Following graduation, Duby will continue her current leadership role as Children’s Ministry Director.

Student announcements

Ryan Green, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Green of Maitland, has been named to Randolph-Macon Academy's Dean's List for the first quarter of the 2011-12 school year.

The following local students graduated from Belhaven University on Dec. 8:

Michelle Ficarrotto of Winter Park, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Michele Murphy of Winter Park, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Services.

Gabrielle Nicole Torrez, of Maitland, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Flagler College.

Dr. Lapchick honored

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida has announced that it will be honoring Dr. Richard Lapchick, DeVos Sport Business Management Program Chair at UCF, at its annual Dinner of Tribute on Wednesday, April 25. McDonald house

Last month the Ronald McDonald House program of Orlando celebrated 15 years of service to families with children facing medical crisis in the Central Florida community with a “Share-A-Night” reception and lighting ceremony at the Ronald McDonald House. To date, over 15,000 families have found a “home-away-from-home” at the two Ronald McDonald House locations in Orlando.

Jannett Roberts has joined Turnstile Media Group’s Community Media division as director of business development and associate publisher. Community Media publishes the Winter Park-Maitland Observer, Seminole Voice, East Orlando Sun and Baldwin Park Living.

Tanya Gummer, a Dietary Aide and Cook at Winter Park Care & Rehab in Winter Park, Florida, is a star when it comes to ‘flexibility’ with her residents. She has learned many techniques of making her residents more comfortable and connected over her eight years of childcare. One technique in particular is that of kneeling down to wheelchair level and speaking in a soft and soothing tone to her residents, addressing them eye-to-eye.

Dell and Goodwill Industries International announced an additional 319 donation sites will become part of the Dell Reconnect program, which offers an easy, convenient and responsible way for people to recycle computer equipment and other electronics.

Hardin Construction Company, LLC, one of the nation’s leading construction services firms, announced the promotion of David Bacon, senior project manager; Charlie Brooks, superintendent; Richard Redgrave, superintendent; Clyde Sumalpong, senior field engineer and Steven Will, project manager.

Dr. Steven McCarus, medical director of advance gynecology at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, has been selected to be among the first in the nation to use Ethicon’s Endo-Surgery ENSEAL G2 Super Jaw Tissue Sealer for use in total vaginal hysterectomies. The G2 Super Jaw, which launched this year, is a single-use surgical instrument used for coagulating and transecting blood vessels as well as tissue bundles.

Dr. William Steele, the local dermatologist who won the $198 million Powerball jackpot in 2009, is lucky once again. Dr. Steele won the largest raffle prize at the Shepherd’s Hope Famous Faces Masquerade Ball in October and he donated the entire $10,000 amount back to the organization bringing the family’s total 2011 donation to $150,000 to benefit Shepherd’s Hope.

Winston James Developer reports it recently closed on two lease agreements at Aloma Business Center, developed by Winston-James Development, LLC, and located on Aloma Ave. in Winter Park.
