United Arts of Central Florida awarded grant

United Arts of Central Florida was recently awarded a $250,000 Arts and Cultural Community Support Grant — a $50,000 increase from last year — from the Darden Foundation, the charitable giving entity sponsored by Darden Restaurants. United Arts is organized and operated exclusively for cultural and educational purposes to further programs in the arts, science and history in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Funding from the Darden Foundation supports United Arts’ goal of supporting an array of thriving and diverse Central Florida-based nonprofit cultural organizations to enrich the lives of residents and visitors.

Winter Park Police promotes recycling, safety

In an effort to encourage good crime prevention practices and to foster proper recycling, the Winter Park Police Department has partnered with Waste Pro in providing a large dumpster for residents to drop off their empty cardboard boxes only from electronic purchases and other valuable holiday gift packaging instead of leaving them curbside for Waste Pro pick-up. This is not only an effective way to thwart crime in your neighborhood, but also a preventative method of not advertising to potential criminals what might be “available” in your residence. The dumpster is available for use Thursday, Dec. 15, through Saturday, Dec. 31, at the police station located in the Public Safety Facility at 500 N. Virginia Ave. It will be positioned on the west side of the building near the intersection of Virginia and Swoope avenues. For regular recycling needs, please see the lists below for items that can and cannot be recycled in your new Waste Pro residential recycling carts. Remember to empty all cardboard boxes of packing materials such as Styrofoam, bubble wrap, plastics, etc. prior to recycling. These items can be recycled: aluminum, aerosol, tin and steel cans, cardboard, cereal boxes, drink cartons, gift boxes, glass jars and bottles, magazines and catalogs, newspaper, paper, paper towel rolls, and plastic bottles and containers (labeled #1 and #2). These items can NOT be recycled: batteries, bubble wrap, carpet, clothing or shoes, dishes, paper plates, pots or pans, electronics, foil or flocked papers, food tainted items, food waste, hazardous waste, juice pouches, packing peanuts, pizza boxes, plants or yard waste, plastic bags or plastic wrap, shredded paper, Styrofoam, tires or hoses, and wood scraps or wood items. For more information about the Winter Park Police Department, please visit wppd.org or cityofwinterpark.org/sustainability for additional recycling details.
