Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital, recently held a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony to celebrate the opening of some new, unique patient rooms. These two rooms have been created specifically for patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and other diseases, who need intensive care for a long period of time in a hospital.

Art applications

Applications for The 53rd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival are available at www.zapplication.org now through midnight Sunday, Sept. 25. Blood donors

Insight Credit Union and the Insight Inspire volunteers joined partners with 9 Family Connection and the Florida Blood Center for their annual blood drive. The event was held Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the WFTV Channel 9 studios in Orlando. The Insight Inspire volunteers donated not only hours to help coordinate the event, but many also donated blood to help save lives in the community.

ESPN visits

On Sept. 12, Full Sail University was proud to host David Saphirstein, ESPN Director, Creative Technology for a guest lecture and presentation at Full Sail Live, the university’s performance venue. The presentation concluded with the premiere of Monday Night Football’s opening sequence, which was taped on location at Full Sail in July.

Vote for funding

Nemours Children’s Hospital unveiled a specially designed Facebook poll that will enable the community to decide how to best use a $500,000 grant to enhance care for children at the hospital, which opens in the fall of 2012. Visit Facebook.com/Nemours to cast your vote through Sept. 26.

Rollins still No. 1

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Rollins College No. 1 among 127 regional universities in the South in its annual rankings of “America’s Best Colleges.” This is the seventh consecutive year that Rollins has been named to the top spot in this category. Rollins was also ranked first in the South in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category for offering the best value.

Youth basketball

Maitland youth basketball preseason practice starts in early November with games beginning in December. Boys and girls of all levels are welcome. Coaches are needed. Limited scholarships are available. Call 407-539-2830.

Sponsor a Bubbe

Throughout the year, Jewish Family Services delivers hot kosher meals to the homebound elderly, hoping to make their holidays a little brighter. JFS is asking the community to help supplement these costs by adopting a Bubbe or a Zayde, so that they may enjoy a hot holiday meal for the Jewish New Year. The cost of one meal is $10. Checks can be made payable to Jewish Family Services and mailed to JFS, The George Wolly Center, 2100 Lee Road, Winter Park, FL 32789. Please indicate on your check that your donation is for Holiday Meals.

If you are a homebound senior, JFS volunteers will bring a kosher Rosh Hashanah dinner to your home on Wednesday, Sept. 28. To be included or to volunteer to deliver meals, please call JFS at 407-644-7593, extension 227.

Classroom volunteers

Junior Achievement of Central Florida currently needs business and community members in Orange and Seminole counties to serve as classroom volunteers for students in middle and high schools. Volunteer opportunities are available at three levels and require about one-hour per week for five to seven sessions, depending on the program. Special Olympics Florida announced its newest year-round sponsor today: Altamonte Springs-based Sihle Insurance Group. Sihle’s gift of $10,000 will help Special Olympics Florida fulfill its mission of providing year-round sports training and competition to 15,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their families.

Kevin McClanahan, sales associate at Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate’s Winter Park office, ranked No. 74 among the nation’s top individual agents in closed sides by the Wall Street Journal/REAL Trends Top 1,000.

Winter Park-based pawn chain La Familia Pawn & Jewelry announced today that it has hired Lawrence Kahlden as the company’s new chief executive officer.
