Top high school computer science students from across Florida tested their skills and competed against their peers at the Computer Science Programming Contest at Stetson University on Nov. 20. Winning second place was Trinity Preparatory School’s Sam Savitz and Travis Frederick. Twenty-seven teams participated, representing 14 high schools from around the state.

Two Florida Hospital campuses are partnering with Orange County Public Schools and Quest, Inc. to host Project SEARCH. Project SEARCH is a first-of-its-kind program in the Greater Orlando area for highly functional special needs students ages 18-22 to develop job skills to prepare them for a variety of careers upon graduation. Twenty students, eight at Florida Hospital East Orlando and 12 at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, are participating in this program.

In the last six months, Christian HELP (who serve all people regardless of their religious beliefs) has connected about 3,000 people to jobs through job fairs, employment counseling and job skills classes, resume help and networking. The organization’s director challenges anyone to come and see what they do — “You will be amazed at the amount of work and results that are coming out of this humble abode in Casselberry,” Jackie Normand said. Winter Park resident Betty Schnur recently graduated from two weeks of training and received an assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), a non-profit organization that breeds, trains, and places assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Schnur was matched with a Successor Service Dog named Eston, a 2-year-old yellow Golden/Labrador Retriever mix, who responds to more than 50 commands. CCI assistance dogs are provided free of charge, though costs to CCI exceed $45,000 to breed, raise, train, and provide ongoing support.
