The Winter Park Police Department recently received an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for $10,917 to enhance the department’s “Realism in Training” Program. The funding will be used to purchase firearm conversion kits, munitions and personal protective gear for officers.

The Hartford Financial Services Group recently donated $12,500 to non-profit organizations in Central Florida. Last week, employees in The Hartford’s office in Maitland presented $2,500 each to three organizations: Harbor House, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and The Mustard Seed.

Habitat for Humanity of Winter Park recently dedicated a new Habitat home to Gail Richardson, who for the past seven years has worked in dining services at Rollins College. Campus faculty and staff worked to help Richardson meet the requirement of 300 “sweat equity” hours necessary to become a Habitat home owner.

Volunteers are needed for AARP’S Tax-Aide Program. Tax-Aide counselors help prepare tax returns and assist with filing requirements for older taxpayers and others. Training for volunteer Tax-Aide counselors begins Monday, Jan. 3 in the Orlando Area. Exceptional speakers from the health care industry, local architectural firms, local hospitals, nonprofit organizations and professional builders brought participants closer to understanding the need for exceptional, appropriate design for our senior population on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in honor of National Aging in Place week. Maitland Mayor Doug Kinson read the proclamation to kick off the event.

Habitat Seminole’s “ReStore” is a 7,400-square-foot retail store located at 335 S.R. 436 in the Sam’s Plaza in Casselberry that needs the community’s support with donations. All proceeds from the ReStore go toward building Habitat houses in Seminole County. The wish list includes building materials, doors, functioning appliances and electronics, sinks, countertops, cabinets, lighting, furniture, mirrors and artwork. They do not accept clothing, toys and paint. The ReStore recently received an in-kind donation (valued at $7,000) for the electrical work at the new location from Carter Electric. Chipotle will partner with Jamie Oliver this Halloween for a $1 million fundraiser to benefit Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. This year’s Boorito event will encourage guests to retire their old foiled burrito costume for one that resembles a horrific processed food item. Once in costume, guests only need to visit their local Chipotle between 6 p.m. and closing time on Sunday, Oct. 31 and the restaurant will treat them to a burrito for only $2.

The award-winning SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program is looking for volunteers. SHINE is a Medicare and health insurance information, counseling and assistance program that is part of the positive aging campaign. Currently, there are about 450 dedicated SHINE volunteers statewide who provide services to Medicare customers, their families and caregivers. SHINE volunteers perform a variety of functions, including providing information, counseling and assistance; making educational presentations to community groups; distributing materials at health fairs, senior fairs and outreach events; and assisting with general program support.
