1200 block of Sand Pine Avenue. Drunken driving. An officer met a woman around 8:07 p.m. at her residence, where her car was subject to a hit-and-run in a loud crash. A neighbor had seen the incident and gotten the plate number of the suspect vehicle. A mailbox on a nearby street was found snapped before the suspect parked in a yard on the next block. The driver stayed in the car with lights flashing and engine on. The driver told the officer he did not speak English, so the officer called a Spanish-speaking officer for help. The driver got out, so the officer asked him to stand at the rear of his car. The driver shut off the car and then rummaged in its back, where an officer saw various unopened and empty beer cans. The officer noticed traded paint that matched the victim’s car. The driver said he had no license and that he had been home 20 minutes, despite having parked just a few minutes ago. He said he had not crashed, just driven around the block. When asked why, he said for family. When asked why family had him drive around, he said for no reason. During his walk-and-turn, he started before instructed; did not count until step five, which he counted as three; took 10 steps while counting to 12; stopped during an improper turn; announced he would walk back; and then took 15 steps on the return. Officers arrested him on DUI and hit-and-run charges.

10000 block of West Colonial Drive. Theft. At 6:58 p.m., an officer saw big-box store employees tackle a man attempting to flee the store with unpaid items and then helped subdue him with handcuffs. The suspect admitted he had stolen two $12.88 watches, a pack of $11.94 underwear and the $69.78 boots he was wearing, worth $107.48 total. He had purchased motor oil and put his sneakers in the boots box before attempting to flee. Records indicated five prior theft convictions for him, three for grand theft. He admitted he had stolen a credit card in a burglary that morning, too. He was under arrest on theft and resisting a merchant charges.

Little Spring Hill Drive. Drug possession. An officer encountered a man walking on the street, and they agreed to talk. The man said he had been walking home from a friend’s house. Dispatchers found an active warrant for probation violation of a disorderly intoxication charge in Sumter County, so the officer arrested him. A search revealed a glass pipe with white powder in his pocket, which he said he had forgotten about. When told the pipe would be tested, he said, “It’s for meth.” A test confirmed this before the pipe rolled off the officer’s trunk and shattered; it was bagged as evidence.
