APRIL 17
17500 block of West Colonial Drive. Drunken driving. An officer noticed two occupants sleeping in running car at a gas pump, so he knocked and announced himself several times until the driver woke. He asked the driver to lower her window. She grappled the steering wheel, flicked turn signals and then activated her wipers. The officer asked again for her to lower her window; she did so, halfway, at which point the officer smelled booze. He asked her to lower the window the whole way, but she tugged the shift and then looked at her feet to find the brake. The officer commanded her to turn off the car, not drive, several times, until she pushed the ignition button to turn it off. She fumbled through a purse for her license and with her seat belt while obeying a request to exit the car. The officer asked again for her license, so she opened every door of the car to check, arriving at the passenger’s door and telling him, “We are in serious trouble.” But the passenger did not wake; the officer called her back to the rear of the car. She identified herself, but when the officer asked for a birthdate, she first said syllables like her last name. After much thought, she responded to an officer’s query of where she came from: “The 429.” When asked what was by State Road 429, she said, “I’m not going to answer.” She said she was feeling fine and had been drinking but refused to answer when asked what she had drunk. When asked the time at 12:30, she said it was about 2 a.m. She refused to answer questions about her sobriety level and whether she had eaten, “because I have not done anything wrong.” She offered a similar answer when asked to perform sobriety tests. When the officer informed her of the consequences and that it did not inherently mean jail time, she said, “I don’t think the circumstances are clearly known.” The officer asked whether she had understood; she said no and then refused to comply after he explained it twice more. He arrested her on a drunken driving charge and then took her to a DUI center, where she said while slurring, “I’m not going to do any breath test because I’m not drunk.” When asked to perform the breath test, she said, “I could be requesting fellatio.” She refused the test and asked for an attorney.
APRIL 10
Sabinal Street and Aldama Court. Drunken driving. At about 11:05 p.m., an officer found a car on the side of the road at the intersection. The vehicle was parked with its lights on, engine running and one tire in grass. The officer woke the driver, who reeked of alcohol. When asked where he was going and where he lived, the driver said, “Right here in Winter Garden.” He got his wallet to retrieve his driver’s license but then stopped looking and just stood. An officer asked for his license again, and he repeated this process before handing over an insurance card on a third attempt. On the fourth try, the driver stated his birthdate and handed his wallet to an officer. He said he did not recall how much alcohol he had drunk and then became upset. He repeatedly refused sobriety tests, shouting “(Expletive), no!” the last time he was asked. When commanded to turn around for arrest on DUI charges, he stood still and refused repeatedly. Officers turned him around, so he locked his fingers together above his head, refusing commands to stop resisting. An officer jolted him with a taser, which seemed to have no effect, and he continued cursing and refusing. Another officer tased him, which finally got him to comply. He yelled profanities and refused a breath sample, saying he had beaten a previous DUI and the officers could do nothing. Despite information that he could face 18 months of suspended driving privileges and a misdemeanor by refusing, he continued refusing.
Clarke Road and West Colonial Drive. Drunken driving. At 4:52 p.m., someone flagged down an officer to report a driver in the left-turn lane who had passed out at the wheel. Officers noticed the car was running and in drive but woke the driver, who smelled like alcohol. It took several asks for him to say he was all right, although he remained confused by officers’ presence. An officer reached in via the passenger side and shifted the car to park, after which the driver staggered from the car at officers’ request. The driver said he had been driving home to Hiawassee from downtown Orlando. When told that did not make sense because his car was facing toward downtown, the driver pointed west and said that was toward downtown, labeling it as north. He also said he was on Silver Star Road en route to Clarcona-Ocoee Road, despite these roads running nearly parallel a significant distance apart. Officers arrested him on DUI charges.
APRIL 27
10600 block of West Colonial Drive. Robbery. A man told an officer arriving around 1:40 a.m. at a fast food business about an altercation in the drive-thru lane. The man urinated in the bushes nearby because the business’s inside was closed, he said, at which point he bumped into a parked car on his way back to his vehicle in the drive-thru lane. A man sleeping in the back seat awoke and yelled, “You fat (expletive)” at the complainant, who said he just kept walking while derogatory insults continued. The awakened man challenged the complainant to a fight before throwing the complainant’s order in his face, spilling it all, and trying to strike the complainant, according to reports. The passenger said she was calling police, so the suspect snatched her phone. The worker who delivered the order — known as the suspect’s girlfriend — yelled for him to stop or she would be fired, so the suspect left the phone and then fled in his car. Police found the suspect at a gas station down the road, but he fled into the woods. When an officer announced he was deploying a K-9 unit, the suspect surrendered and was arrested. The suspect said the complainant had banged the suspect’s wipers on the windshield and then walked away, smiling, so the suspect was mad and asked, “Why are you (expletive) with me?” The suspect said the complainant had then told him to go back to sleep before laughing with the passenger, so an argument began. The suspect admitted to throwing the food and grabbing the phone, as well as his intention to destroy the phone, valued at $850. But he returned the phone and then drove away, panicking by hiding in bushes when he saw police at the gas station. Charges against the suspect include robbery and burglary.
APRIL 12
1600 block of Avalon Road. Hit-and-run. Dispatchers reported a hit-and-run incident from which one driver tailed another, which led to an officer speaking with both around 7:45 a.m. One driver said he had been going west on West Colonial Drive near Bluford Avenue in Ocoee. A pickup traveling the same way hit his van, so he followed to the next traffic light, where he asked the pickup driver to pull over and exchange information. The van driver reported the pickup driver had then said, “(Expletive) you,” and then drove away, so the van driver followed him all the way to a storage facility, where he called police. When officers spoke to the pickup driver, he said, “Just hurry up and take me to jail,” and officers arrested him.
