April 6, 176 block of Windtree Lane: Around 2 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in reference to a possible burglary. The owner of a condo unit had been informed by her neighbor that someone was inside her property, despite it being unoccupied since June 2016. The officer and resident discovered the window was unlocked and the blinds had been tampered with. Upon entering the apartment, they found the master bedroom door locked from the inside and demanded the occupant inside to open the door. The male occupant exited the room and was immediately arrested, as the owner did not recognize him. The occupant stated he was dating the owner’s daughter and the couple had been crashing in the apartment.
April 8, East Plant Street: Around 8 p.m., WGPD received a call about a reckless driver in a white Chevrolet swerving all over the road and driving over curbs. Two responding officers arrived at the described location to find the scene of an accident at the intersection of East Plant Street and North Woodland Street. A witness stated the driver collided with another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection. The officers suspected the driver was intoxicated after recognizing the smell of alcohol and the presence of empty beer cans inside the van. The driver attempted to place the key in the ignition, which the officer believed was an attempt to flee, so the officers had the driver exit the vehicle and secured him in handcuffs after noticing he struggled to remain standing. The driver later provided breath samples at a DUI testing facility resulting in readings of 0.293, 0.249 and 0.278.
April 7, 401 block of East Geneva Street: About a quarter to 2 a.m., an officer received a call from a fellow officer for assistance in regards to someone who was suspected of stealing TVs from a major retailer and was attempting to flee. The suspect, who was driving a silver Hyundai without headlights on was spotted by the backup officer. Both officers pursued the Hyundai until it reached Geneva Street, which is a dead-end street that leads to Tiger Minor Park. The officers strategically positioned themselves to corner the vehicle. The vehicle’s occupants attempted to find an exit but failed. Once an officer approached the unmoving vehicle, they found it empty, but discovered the stolen items, which included a 49" Samsung curved TV, 6 series, valued at $700 and two 50" Phillips TVs valued at $400. A perimeter search involving multiple agencies and K-9 units were set up to locate the suspects, which were eventually found due to a nearby resident who notified police he witnessed two women in his pool bath, who then left and jumped the fence, heading east. Both women were located and finally arrested at 3.28 a.m. Both women were charged with loitering, criminal mischief and attempt to flee an officer.
