'Our Town' at WPHS

SEPT. 27

The Winter Park High School Drama department will present the classic American play “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder at the Ann Derflinger Auditorium at WPHS for six performances from Thursday, Sept. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 6. Performances will be at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 6. All tickets are $10 at the door. WPHS’s Ann Derflinger Auditorium is located at 2100 Summerfield Road in Winter Park.

SEPT. 29

Saturday, Sept. 29, museums nationwide will open their doors for free including many in Winter Park and Maitland. Museum-goers can download free tickets on the Smithsonian website, which grants free admission for two people. For a list of participating museums visit Smithsonian.com/MuseumDayLive

Project Walk Orlando is having its 3rd Annual Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Sept. 30, at Cranes Roost Park. For information visit ProjectWalkOrlando.org/events.html

OCT. 6

“The Mayors’ Sole Challenge,” a 30-minute fun walk through scenic Winter Park, is Saturday, Oct. 6. Festivities will begin at 8 a.m. at the main stage in Central Park. This friendly competition between Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park will bring folks together for a celebration of community and health. The event is free to the public, but advanced registration is requested by visiting HealthyCentralFlorida.org or calling 407-644-2300, extension 241.

Central Florida Sports Complex will have a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 133 Atlantic Drive, Maitland. Food, snacks and beverages will be provided. Winter Park Volleyball Club will train there. For information visit wpvc.org

Florida Premier Research Institute, in conjunction with Florida Pulmonary and Florida Premier Sleep Institute, will have a free Health Fair Family Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Winter Park Civic Center.

Playful Early Learners Workshops for Parents: Positive Parenting and Playful Early Learning, Birth to Age 5 is Wednesdays, Oct. 10, 17, 31, & Nov. 7, from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Shayna’s Village at the JCC Maitland. Child Care provided. Register at PlayfulEarlyLearners.com

Enzian’s Popcorn Flicks in Central Park will feature “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” from 8 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11. Gather friends, grab a blanket and enjoy classic family films once a month under the stars in Winter Park’s Central Park. Films and popcorn are free compliments of Enzian. Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. is Coffee House with Open Mic Poetry Night. The evening’s theme is “People in the Neighborhood.” Registration is required.

· Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. is Stretch & Body Mechanics Demo: Home & Garden Tasks by Restored by Touch. Registration is required.

· Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. is Designing Your Child’s Space w/ Marilyn Russell from Design Magnifique. Learn how to create children’s spaces that are fun, practical and safe. Goody bags will be provided. Registration is required

The Maitland Public Library hosts preschool story and craft time every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Baby time stories and activities are at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday. And Reading Buddies for kindergarten through fifth grade is at 4 p.m. every Thursday.
