JUNE 23

Mead Botanical Garden will be buzzing with dozens of volunteers from Full Sail University and Summit Church on Saturday, June 23. Projects will include landscaping and invasive removal around the community garden and invasive species removal around the west side of the wetland restoration site. This is the inaugural work to establish a walking trail around the wetland.

Comedy balloon entertainer Karen Climer will perform “Karen Climer’s Crazy Balloon Show” at local libraries. JULY 3

Come celebrate the city of Altamonte Springs’ 17th annual Independence Day for Red Hot & Boom. The event will be from 4-11 p.m. at Cranes Roost Park on Tuesday, July 3. The event features live entertainment brought to you by XL106.7 Radio, children’s activities, vendor booths, food, drink and a 25-minute fireworks display. Fireworks will begin at about 9:30 p.m.

JULY 4

Come to the 21st annual Hunter Vision July 4th Watermelon 5k Run/Walk at Mead Garden, 1300 S. Denning Drive, at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4. Funds raised from the event will support the Track Shack Foundation. In addition to the run, there will be a watermelon-eating competition at 8:30 a.m. For more information, visit trackshack.com

The city of Winter Park will present their annual Olde Fashioned 4th of July Celebration at Central Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Winter Park on Wednesday, July 4. The celebration will feature live patriotic music, horse-drawn wagon rides and more. Children’s activities will include the annual bicycle parade at 9 a.m. from City Hall to Central Park. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will present their Independence Day Open House on July 4. The museum, which is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of work by American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, will provide free admission to its galleries from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit morsemuseum.org

At 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday, the Maitland Public Library hosts preschool story and craft time. At 10:30 a.m. each Thursday, it hosts baby time stories and activities. At 4 p.m. each Thursday, it hosts Reading Buddies for kindergarten through fifth grade. Call 407-647-7700.

There is still time to register for Winter Park Day Nursery’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program that will begin on Aug. 20. It’s free to all children who will be age 4 before Sept. 1.
