Oviedo has had a TV star turned painter, a Miss Florida winner, a “The Bachelor” contestant, an Olympic track star and a University of Florida quarterback. But can the town that’s famous for its chickens launch a star from the stage? Let’s find out!

It’s time for the 2013 Great Day’s Got Talent competition, right under the spotlight in downtown Oviedo. Dozens will enter, but only one can be crowned the winner on stage at Great Day in the Country, hosted by the Oviedo Woman’s Club.

Last year’s inaugural competition saw music and dance acts battling for a chance at stardom, with brother and sister team Shannon and Kyle Broome winning it all with their acoustic groove.

“It was a lot of fun last year,” organizer Angela Iversen said. “We have a lot of great talent in the area.”

But despite the success last year, the organizers of the event are moving things up a notch, with more contestants and a bigger show. That’s why they’re turning to YouTube to find the hidden talent in the area that might be a bit shy at an audition.

“We thought we’d give people the option of submitting the video of their talents because they might be shy or not sure if they have what it takes,” Iversen said. “This opens it up a little bit to really get those closet singers and shower singers out to show what talent they have.”

The singers, dancers and performers who make the cut will go before professional judges for the next round. They’ll whittle the show down to less than a dozen finalists.

It all builds up to that day in the spotlight, when the lucky finalists will rock the crowd and hopefully wow the panel of judges at the live event in front of tens of thousands of Great Day in the Country visitors.

“The finalists will perform in front of one of the largest festivals in Seminole County,” master of ceremonies Regina Bereswill said.

Will you make the cut? Here’s your first chance: Great Day’s Got Talent is accepting YouTube submissions right now until 8 p.m. on Oct. 4. The casting call is open to anyone in the area who can later perform in person. After that, the acts who make the cut will get a call back to test their chops — and their stage presence — at an in-person semifinal round on Oct. 12.

The big day is Nov. 9, when Great Day in the Country explodes into Oviedo’s largest annual festival, offering food, crafts, art and a happy welcome to the holiday season — plus that big shot on the east end stage.

“Last year people enjoyed themselves, were bopping to the music, and we’re hoping for even greater success this year,” Bereswill said.
