Our Central Florida sprawl leaves us sitting in cars more than people in other areas of the country. Our TV and computer screens trap us in our seats, too. But the great weather — promoting outdoor activity and fresh fruit — can help. It doesn’t take much to feel the difference — losing just 10 pounds can mean a change in blood pressure and clothing size, and less work for your heart.

You can find scores of diets and exercise plans on the web, in stores and in advertisements, but they all come down to the basics: eating healthy and being physically active. Eat more fiber, fruits, vegetables and protein, and fewer complex carbohydrates and fried foods. The real challenge is making it work in your life.

For healthy eating, try our local sources of fresh fruits, vegetables and fish. Winter Park and Maitland have weekend farmer’s markets — a great addition to nearby produce stands and grocers. Our local fish market offers a great alternative to meat.

Find a physical activity you enjoy. You can make the gym part of your daily routine for moving, music and camaraderie. But the gym is not for everyone. You might prefer the flexibility and solitude of the outdoors when getting your exercise. Many local residents have taken to the local trails, such as the Cady Way extension. Bicycling has become quite popular this year. A minimal investment can have you on a good bike (with a helmet) and on your way to touring the area while building muscle, strengthening your heart and burning fat. Local running groups such as the Orlando Runner’s Club can inspire you for more miles with expert advice and companionship. For details, visit www.Meetup.com

Little things add up. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator and burn 25 more calories. Take the stairs four times in a day, and you will have burned 100 additional calories. Park at the far end of any parking lot so you can have a longer walk to the door. Look up at the sky and think of those few extra minutes spent shedding fat cells as your own nano-vacation.

Whatever strategy you have to eat well and get moving, make it fun. Make it something you enjoy and will do as part of your life, not just a short fix. Make your meals enjoyable and tasteful. Make your activity one of the highlights of your day. Enjoy each day and each bit of health.
