Angel L. Reyes has been the custodian crew leader at SunRidge Elementary School since it opened in 2012. He said he loves his position at the school because he likes making sure the students are in a safe and clean environment at all times. Reyes helps out during lunch, as well, making it his job to ensure the students have what they need each day. He also serves as an elementary program counselor for SunRidge’s YMCA before- and after-school program.

Why did you want to work at a school?

I will say that at the beginning it was because of the hours and the benefits. But as the years have gone by, it has turned more into making sure students have a safe and clean environment at school. And working with the YMCA program allows me to show students to share and care for each other.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love that we all work together to do what's best for our students. Everybody gives more than a 100% to give the best education and knowledge to our students.

Why does this job appeal to you?

I see that we have a lot of students with special needs, and I like them to think I am a person they can trust. I have realized they need someone to feel comfortable with.

What's it like watching the students grow up at the school?

It is amazing to see how fast they grow up. You see them develop into young adults with minds of their own.

What motivates you and pushes you to do your best?

Being a part of the after-school program with the YMCA team has helped me get closer to the students. This has allowed me to see some of the students’ needs closer.

What's the nicest thing a student or faculty member has done for you?

When students give me letters thanking me and appreciating me for the job I do.  It means a lot when you are appreciated.

What’s your favorite restaurant and favorite meal?

Longhorn and Wild West Shrimp and Salmon

Do you have any pets?

Yes, a cat named Indy.

What’s your favorite movie and why?

“Star Wars,” because that was the first movie I saw when I was 7.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Make everybody love and appreciate life more.

What’s your favorite vacation spot and why?

Any spot while cruising. When I am at sea, it makes me feel calmed and relaxed.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Work at home and spend time with my grandchildren at theme parks.

What’s your favorite book and why?

I don't read books; I’m more of a news-reading guy.

What are some of your can’t-miss TV shows?

“The Good Doctor,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Black List” and the news.

If you could put any four musicians on an alternate Mount Rushmore, who would it be?

Freddie Mercury, George Michael, Elton John and Prince.

Tell us about your family

I have been married for 30 years and have three kids. I have been blessed with five beautiful grandchildren, and I love spending time with them.
