Local politicians speak against Parental Rights in Education bill

Orange County Commissioner Nicole Wilson and Orange County School Board member Johanna López both issued statements against the new law.

Two local politicians have spoke out against HB 1557, the Parental Rights in Education bill Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law Monday, March 29.

Orange County District 1 Commission Nicole Wilson, who represents West Orange, Southwest Orange and Horizon West, sent an email Friday, March 25, with the subject line: “Commissioner Wilson Says Gay.”

“Last night, the ‘Don't Say Gay’ bill, HB 1557 passed the Florida Senate, now on its way to the governor,” Wilson wrote in the email. “Please know that in District 1 and everywhere: We love you, we embrace you and you add value to this community. We say, ‘Gay.’”

The day before DeSantis signed the bill, Orange County School Board member Johanna López published a tweet in opposition.

“As a mother, School Board member and former teacher, I’m appalled to see Gov. DeSantis sign the #DontSayGay bill into law. Our children deserve to be supported, empowered and respected.”

López is running for Florida House District 43.
