The Maitland Fire Department would like to take the opportunity to introduce our residents to our relatively new program entitled the “Residential Knox-Box Program.” Many residents will have no idea what a Knox-Box is, or what it has to do with the Fire Department.

This approach for fire service organizations to certain target groups is not new, but Maitland is one organization that recognizes its benefits to our citizens. A residential Knox box is a box that hangs outside on your front door. It is a high security key safe designated for single-family homes that only Maitland Fire Rescue responders can access.

With a residential Knox-Box installed, emergency responders can respond quickly, without forcing entry or breaking doors. We simply access your entrance key stored inside the box along with your emergency contact information; provide medical or other assistance and re-lock your door when we leave. These boxes are designed for our seniors that live alone or for our residents that have extensive medical issues that would prevent them from being able to answer the door in the event of an emergency when our responders arrive. We were able to purchase these boxes through a grant we received from our close friends at the Winter Park Health Foundation.

Due to the popularity of these boxes with our residents and the limited amount of boxes we have available at this time, loaner boxes will be made on a first come first serve basis. There is an application process, and you can find that application soon under the Fire Rescue section on the city website at itsmymaitland.com or by calling 407-539-6226. When a box is available, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment to have it installed. If none are available, you will be placed on a waiting list in the order of the request received. It is our goal to be able to supply boxes for all of our interested residents meeting the target qualifications. We look forward to hearing from you.

All the members of the Maitland Fire Rescue Department thank you for allowing us to serve you and this beautiful city in line with our department slogan - “Our family helping yours, whatever it takes.”

If you have any additional questions about the program please feel free to contact our program manager PM/Engineer Chase Rozell at the fire department’s administration office at 407-539-6226.
