Winter Park High's Cheer Squad has best season in 12 years

City Council Meeting of March 11, 2013

The Maitland City Council met March 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Below is a synopsis of that meeting.

Special Presentation:

• Councilman Valdes presented a proclamation to the Winter Park High School (WPHS) Varsity Competition Cheer Squad and their coaches commending them on their best season in 12 years. The 2012-2013 WPHS Varsity Competition Cheer Squad won the Metro Cheer Competition in January positioning them as one of the best-ranked teams heading into the FHSAA State Competition. On Feb. 2 they hit a near flawless routine, winning the FHSAA State Championship in the Large Varsity All Girl Division. On Feb. 8 the cheer squad scored a perfect routine, placing third in the nation and third in the world competition.

Consent Items:

• The minutes of the Feb. 25 Council meeting were approved as presented.

• Approved the submittal of a $60,750 Florida Department of Health, Bureau of EMS matching grant for the purpose of obtaining three stretcher power load systems with a 25 percent matching contribution from the city.

• Approved the purchase and installation of satellite phones and base station with accessories from Sky Base Communications in the amount of $33,000 and portable radios and base station with accessories from Motorola in the amount of $36,000. These purchases are being made under the FEMA EOC Grant awarded to the city in 2011 and amended in 2013.

• Adopted a revised resolution supporting a Quick Action Closing Fund incentive for Digital Risk Co., including a commitment of $200,000 over a five-year payout period, beginning in FY 2014-15. The purpose for this resolution is to correct several minor errors in the original resolution, no substantial changes.

• Approved the purchase of a 2013 Chevrolet 2500 HD Crew Cab, for use as a police mobile crime scene vehicle, in the amount of $32,461 from Stingray Chevrolet off the 2013 Florida Sheriffs Association Contract No. 12-20-0905 with funding to come from the Police Department’s forfeiture funds.

Decision Items:

• Mr. Kyle McCully was appointed to the Fiscal Advisory Board effective immediately to fill an unexpired term that expires on March 15, 2014.

• Mr. Vance Guthrie was appointed to the Lakes Advisory Board, effective immediately, to fill an unexpired term that expires on Jan. 11, 2014; and, Mrs. Laurie Schott was appointment effective Jan. 3, 2013 for a three-year term.

• Reappoint Mrs. Barbara Vickers to the Senior Citizens Advisory Board effective Feb. 28, 2013 for a three-year term.

• Petition No# 2012-02(AZ)(PD), 0 E. Packwood Ave., Maitland Town Properties, LLC, was tabled to a future meeting.

• Approved the request to hire a consultant to make recommendations on the Police Officers’ & Firefighters’ Pension Plan.
