Maitland’s newest landmark, City Hall, is really starting to take shape. On May 10, observers were treated to a special view as the cupola was attached to the support structure, rising majestically over the roof of the building. Already, the new building is a beautiful landmark on the city’s horizon and is setting the pace for a new skyline for the city that will include many exciting new developments. The contractors, Wharton-Smith, Inc., are steadily approaching the completion deadline of July 16. Now that the cupola is in place, the windows are affixed, and the attractive barrel tile roof is complete, most of the exterior work on the building is done, save for some attractive trim work that will provide accents on the walls. The interior of the building is being finished with tile, paint, trim and casework, and LEED-based electric, air conditioning and other systems are being completed.

During the week of May 21st, Wharton-Smith moved its operations from the construction trailer to a room inside the new building. This was done to make way for the exterior site work (landscaping, sidewalks, benches, etc.) that is soon to get started. The site work generally represents the final “icing on the cake” for the new building, and the city staff and City Council are anxiously looking forward to conducting business in the new building. As your mayor, I can already envision many spirited conversations that the new porch will accommodate while folks chat under the shade of the old oak trees that have been carefully preserved on the site, giving our new City Hall a very traditional ambiance that is sure to appeal to everyone.
