Maitland City Talk

The Maitland City Council met on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Below is a synopsis of that meeting. The next regular scheduled Council meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 28. For updates, please check our website, www.itsmymaitland.com

Public Hearings:

Adopted on second reading an ordinance to establish a permitting system for pain management clinics that will provide definitions, requirements, fees and penalties.

Adopted on second reading an ordinance enabling the transfer to FDOT parcels that will allow FDOT to have a clear title to the CSX right-of-way through the city of Maitland.

Consent Agenda:

The Council minutes of the Jan. 24 were approved as presented and are now available on the city web page. Also approved were the Charter Review Workshop minutes of Jan. 24 and the Council/MAHA Workshop of Jan. 7 as well as various Advisory Board minutes.

Passed a resolution designating $2 from each paid traffic citation that the City receives from the “Red Light” Camera Enforcement Program, “Traffic Light Safety Act,” for police officer training.

Approved a contract with Odyssey Manufacturing Company of Tampa Florida in the amount of $168,500.

Decision Items:

Council reappointed Paul D. Diaz, Robert E. Rawa and Stephen B. Schoene to the Board of Adjustment & Appeals. Scott A. Davey was appointed to fill an unexpired term.

Approved the Rescission Request of the Maitland Concourse DRI Development Order.

Authorized the city manager to proceed to assemble a QTI resolution of support and commitment to funding for the AcAe Software QTI.

Authorized the extension of the existing Historical and Art Center Lease agreements through Sept. 30, 2011 with a six-month option for extension.

Appreciation Dinner

The Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for our Maitland volunteers was held on Tuesday evening, Feb. 8. As the new, recently appointed mayor, I had the distinct privilege and honor of presiding over this very special gathering to recognize and celebrate our esteemed volunteers who devote countless hours of service to our community throughout the year. It is through their dedicated efforts and love of our city that we are able to succeed in any project or matter before us.

All of the city board volunteers who attended the dinner were recognized with great appreciation. There were two very special awards given.

The first was a new award this year, presented for the first time to an individual or individuals who are presently non-city board members, but, nonetheless, have devoted countless hours of their time for the betterment of our city. This award is called the Mayor’s Community Award. The first recipients of this award were Jeff and June Flowers for their creation of the Performing Arts of Maitland (PAM). This nonprofit organization, which was started in 2006, is made up of volunteer members who perform beautiful music at many different venues throughout our city at little or no cost.

The second award was for our Volunteer of the Year. This award serves to recognize the efforts of an individual or individuals who exemplify dedication to our city in the highest degree. This year’s winner was Bev Reponen who has devoted many years of countless hours serving our city. She has not only served on many city boards but also established and/or served on many outside volunteer organizations devoted to the betterment of our city. In addition, Bev has been a councilwoman on our City Council since 2007, serving as our vice mayor from April 2009 to June 2010. In my opinion, she exemplifies and sets the highest standard for all of us to follow.

I would like to thank all our volunteers for their devoted and selfless service to our city. Without your passion, dedication and tireless service, Maitland would not be the wonderful place to live that it is today.
