A local nonprofit organization is asking the community to come out for a fundraising event this weekend.

Miles to Go, which we most recently told you about here, aims to provide individuals in need with the basic necessities they might not have access to otherwise. The custom drawstring bags are filled with items ranging from toothbrushes and deodorant to hand sanitizer, beef jerky and an MTG T-shirt.

Started by 9-year-old Windermere resident Miles Newbold and his mom Danielle, Miles, now 13 years old, and the nonprofit have donated more than 6,000 MTG bags.

In order to continue the efforts, the nonprofit is hosting the first Miles to Go 5K run/walk fundraiser with 100% of ticket proceeds going directly to benefit Miles to Go.

The 5K is a double-looped course on a paved surface, followed immediately after by a celebratory party with food trucks, local vendors and children's activities.

The family-friendly event is welcoming participants of all ages. The event will accommodate both experienced runners and more casual walkers/family groups with a staggered start time and wide course.

The 5K will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bill Frederick Park, 3401 S. Hiawassee Road.
