+ Legion plans flag retirement ceremony

Hugh T. Gregory American Legion Post 63 will conduct a flag retirement ceremony at the Oakland Presbyterian Church, 218 E Oakland Ave., this Friday, June 13, at 1 p.m. in conjunction with the Cub Scouts of America Summer Camp.

Residents are asked to take any unserviceable, damaged or worn American flags to the American Legion, 271 W. Plant St., Winter Garden, or Oakland Presbyterian Church   for them to be properly retired in ceremony in accordance with American flag etiquette.

+ Grab bedsheet for ‘Animal House’ Toga Night at Garden Theatre

The Garden Theatre is opening its Summer Movie Series this week with a “talkback” program on Thursday and Toga Night on Friday.

Matthew C. Gunter, author of “The Capra Touch: A Study of the Director’s Hollywood Classics and War Documentaries, 1934-1945,” will speak prior to the showing of “It Happened One Night” on June 12.

The audience can also dress up and join the toga party during the showing of “Animal House” on June 13.

All movies begin at 7 p.m., and tickets are $5 general admission. The Summer Movie Series runs through Aug. 22.

+ What to do in summer veggie garden

The Orange County Extension Education Center is holding a program on summer vegetable gardens this Thursday, June 12, from 6-7:30 p.m. It will take place at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N. Dillard St., Winter Garden.

Learn basic information on summer gardening and how to take advantage of the season. The cost is $5 per household for materials. Pre-register online at www.OCMGS.eventbrite.com.

+ Summertime at SoBo

The Winter Garden Art Association, 127 S. Boyd St., will offer “Sizzlin Summer at SoBo 2014” — seven weeks of themed art experiences and exploration for children in kindergarten through fifth grades. Mediums include watercolor, acrylic, sketching and three-dimensional art.
