There is an affecting amicability in people who frequent the Y.

I am grateful to be a lifetime honorary board member of the Lakemont YMCA. This national organization has made life and health better for b.w. and me since I returned to my Winter Park hometown in 1980. There is an affecting amicability in people who frequent the Y. And each member comes away in better physical, mental and spiritual health.

If the Y philosophy were worldwide, the world would be a far better place to grow up in, and to enjoy one’s time on Earth.

He’s dead!

So, Osama bin Laden is dead! President Obama reportedly held the Navy Seals back for 16 hours while he “thought things over.” Shouldn’t we be thankful that bin Laden didn’t use Obama’s indecisive vacillation to remove himself from the crosshairs? A former CIA chief of the team hunting bin Laden confirmed with disgust that the CIA had had not one but two opportunities to kill Osama before 9/11. However, with Osama in CIA’s sights, Bill Clinton said no both times! The end simply came on Obama’s watch — Period! — Well, you gotta be lucky sometimes (or do you?).

Fast rail

Omniscient Beth Dillaha enlightens us as follows: “Gov. Rick Scott killed high-speed rail from Tampa to Orlando. Now, he needs to reject SunRail, the diesel commuter-rail line that would run from Volusia to Osceola county. SunRail is worse than high-speed rail in that there is no federal funding in place; the annual operating and maintenance costs would be paid for by Florida taxpayers (without the opportunity for Florida taxpaying voters to approve of such expenditure) and liability for deaths, accidents and injuries caused by CSX would shift to Florida taxpayers. For these reasons alone, Gov. Scott should reject SunRail.”

P.S.: Why the president’s urge to make big investments in high-speed rail? The U.S. is, and will remain, the land of the automobile and the airplane. Personal preferences, time and our enormous distances dictate our chosen means of travel in the U.S.

Free unions

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin fights to keep government employees union-free — a credo that was stated with determination a very long time ago by no less than Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Obama loudly wants everything unionized, and the unions loudly want everything globalized. More to the point, what do we ordinary little citizens wish for our beloved country?

Standard of living

A young American friend who is living and studying in China came to visit us recently. We gathered from her that the Chinese — with three times our population — while not starving or living without a roof over their heads, surely in no way approach the standard of living we Americans take for granted.

2012 election

On the radio, Bill Bennett opines that President Obama will swing right histrionically to attract votes for his re-election. If Obama is re-elected, Bennett says, we’ll get a truthful Obama-swing back to the Left —and that’s where he’ll stay.

Al Gore

Al Gore provides an example that makes us ordinary goofs rejoice who are only mistaken 50 percent of the time. Maybe now Al will tell us his secret for making millions by habitually being wrong!

Progressive gov’t

Thomas Sowell says, “‘progressive government’ is progressive the way a disease is progressive — the longer you have it, the worse it gets.”
