Saturday Morning Quarterback: Kickoff Classic report, results

Dr. Phillips 37, Ocoee 7

Senior quarterback Rudy Norwood ran for a touchdown and passed for another on Dr. Phillips High’s opening two possessions and Daquan Isom, Mike Macon and Jaquarius Bargnare later added first-half scores Friday night to help lead the Panthers to a 37-7 Kickoff Classic win over Ocoee at Bill Spoone Stadium.

DP, ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Class 8A preseason poll, was equally impressive on defense by bottling up Ocoee’s spread offense featuring the quarterback rotation of David Flowers and Steven Hogan.

Flowers connected with Jarquavious Graham on a 77-yard TD pass as time ran down in the third (and final) varsity quarter.

The Panthers return home to face Timber Creek in their Aug. 29 regular-season opener, while Ocoee travels to Colonial High in Week 1 the same day.

Boone 22, Olympia 0

Trailing 15-0 at halftime, the offense for the Olympia Titans struggled to turn drives into points on Friday night as Olympia was shutout on the road in its Kickoff Classic.

The Titans defense performed well, especially in the second half, limiting the Braves to just one scoring possession and forcing a late turnover on an interception.

As head coach Tom Paolucci had eluded to in a preseason interview, the offense — under quarterback Khalyn Strickland, who previously had been the backup for Olympia before Deandre Francois transferred to IMG Academy in the offseason — may take some time to get its feet under it. Paolucci reiterated that point after Friday's loss and expressed a positive outlook going forward.

"The offense always gels late — the defense usually does better this time of year," Paolucci said. "I am optimistic about our offense. I think once our guys starting gelling and working together, we're going to be okay."
