Oct. 3 marks the beginning of Disability History and Awareness Weeks at Orange County Public Schools and throughout Florida.

The weeks will be observed in public schools during the first two weeks of October. The week is intended to recognize the abilities of all students. The district also says that recognition of disabilities results in the better treatment of people with disabilities in society.

Another goal of the weeks is to encourage people with disabilities to grow in self esteem, as well as encourage people to pursue education after high school.

“The district reaffirms a commitment to the full inclusion of and equal opportunities for all individuals with disabilities,” OCPS said in a proclamation at this week’s school board meeting.
