Volunteers from the Florida Shine program will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Downtown Orange County Library to explain how Medicare, supplemental programs and medicare prescription drug plans work and how they interact with retiree health plans. Dr. David Pisetsky, director of Duke University's Arthritis Center, will discuss medical trends and treatment options for autoimmune disease at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Orlando Museum of Art. There will be a Flu + You Lunch and Learn event from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Marks Street Senior Recreation Complex. There will be free lunch, flu shots for the first 150 people registered and an “ask the doc” booth. The flue shots will be for individuals older than 65. SEPT. 24

The “Village Movement” will be the focus of a new six-session program offered by the Lifelong Learning Institute at the Winter Park Public Library beginning Monday, Sept. 24. The program will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays through Nov. 5 at the WPPL. The program is limited to 25 participants and paid pre-registration is required. Newcomers of Central Florida Inc. will sponsor its annual Game Day Fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at the Renaissance Senior Center, 3800 S. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando. Games available include bridge, bunko, euchre, mah-jongg and Mexican train. There will also be door prize drawings. Non-members welcome. Cost is $23 including lunch. The Holocaust Center Community Book Club will meet on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. The book for discussion will be “The Sweetness of Forgetting” by Kristin Harmel. The author will be the guest facilitator. The novel traces the story of Cape Cod bakery owner Hope McKenna-Smith, who travels to Paris to uncover a family secret for her dying grandmother Rose. Rose’s memory is ebbing rapidly due to the onset of Alzheimer’s, and she knows she doesn’t have much time left to tell Hope the truth about a secret she’s kept for 70 years. Dates for future Book Club meetings have been set for the coming year. They are Sunday, Nov. 11; Sunday, Jan. 27; Sunday, Mar. 24 and Sunday, May 19. Meetings are at the Holocaust Center, 851 N. Maitland Ave., in Maitland, at 2 p.m.; books for these events have yet to be announced.

The Senior Speaker Series is on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 1 p.m. Each sessions covers a broad range of topics. Physicians United Plan will have a Medicare 101 and FPG Health and Wellness discussion on Sept. 18.

Bunko is Thursday, Sept. 20, at 12:45 p.m. It can be played just for fun or for prizes.

Line Dance Lessons are 10:30 a.m. to noon every Tuesday in September with Audrey. The class is meant for both beginners and intermediate dancers; the cost is $4 to the teacher.

Yoga will be every Monday, Thursday and Friday in September at 9 a.m. Comfortable clothing and personal mat are required; cost is $2 to the teacher.

The knit and crochet group meets every Monday and Friday in September at 10 a.m.

The conversational French group meets every Monday in September at 1 p.m. Spend some time chatting with others and making new friends.

Tai Chi classes are available every Tuesday in September at 9 a.m. The cost of the class is $2 to the teacher.

The conversational Spanish group meets every Tuesday in September at 1 p.m. Spend some time chatting with others and making new friends.

Chair Yoga is every Thursday in September at 11:30 a.m. The cost of the class is $2 to the teacher.

Recorder classes are every Friday in September, with beginner classes at 12:30 p.m. and intermediate classes at 1 p.m. Lessons are free.

The Maitland Senior Center presents a program for elders on the second Friday of the month that is staffed by counselors from S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders). The program provides free unbiased counseling about Medicare, Medigap, HMOs, Medicaid, prescriptions drug plans and long-term care. Visit FloridaSHINE.org
