NOV. 10

The Central Florida Chapter of the First Marine Division Association invites you to a celebration of our Corps’ 235th Birthday at a special SOS breakfast at the Best Western Mt. Vernon Inn, 110 S. Orlando Ave., on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 8:30 a.m. The guest speaker for this event is Major William Weis, Officer in Charge, Recruiting Station Orlando. The cost is $25, which benefits your local chapter allowing them to continue their support of various community events. Seating is limited and we encourage you to make your reservations early. To mark Veterans Day, the Winter Park Memorial Post 112 will host an "Open House", from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 11 at 4490 N Goldenrod Rd. On Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., the City of Winter Park, in partnership with the Winter Park Ministerial Alliance and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce, will be presenting its inaugural Veterans Day Celebration. This event will be held in honor of all of the veterans of Winter Park, outside at the new state-of-the-art Winter Park Community Center Ruby Ball Amphitheatre located at 721 W. New England Ave.

Join Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer in honoring our local veterans during the city of Orlando’s 2011 Veteran’s Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in downtown Orlando. Bring the family to salute the men and women from more than 150 Central Florida veterans’ organizations and enjoy marching bands, floats and more.

The Les Grande Dames 2011 Fall Championships, featuring women ranging in age from 35 to 85 competing in singles and doubles tennis, is Nov. 3-6 at Winter Park Tennis Center.

The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center will host its 18th Annual Caregiver Conference, on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Winter Park Towers from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m. The conference features Naomi Feil, developer of Validation Therapy. Each year on Thanksgiving morning, thousands of participants come out for the Turkey Trot, a 5K run/power walk and Tot Trot to benefit Seniors First. Last year, the race drew more than 5,300 participants to downtown Orlando’s Lake Eola. Runners of all ages and levels are encouraged to attend. The event will be Thursday, Nov. 24, at 8 a.m. Register online at TrackShack.com

DEC. 30

Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits for more than 60 million Americans will increase 3.6 percent in 2012, the Social Security Administration recently announced. The 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment will begin with benefits that nearly 55 million social security beneficiaries receive in January 2012. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on Dec. 30.

• Join John every Monday, Thursday and Friday in November at 9 a.m. for Yoga. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring your own mat. Cost of the class is $2 to the teacher.

• Do you like to knit or crochet? Do you like making new friends and sharing your favorite patterns? Then join our Knit & Crochet group every Monday in November at 10 a.m.

• Join us every Monday in November at 1 p.m. for our conversational French group. Spend some time chatting with others and making new friends. Must be fluent in French to participate.

• Join Esther every Tuesday in November at 9 a.m. for Tai Chi classes. Cost of the class is $2 to the teacher.

• Join Nick every Tuesday in November for basic Italian lessons at 11 a.m. Lessons are free.
