Schafers signs with FSU

Summer Schafers, a senior pole-vaulter for Olympia High, signed her National Letter of Intent to compete for Florida State University last week.

Schafers, a three-time All-American and USATF state and regional champion, took official visits to UCF and the University of Tennessee — as well as Tallahassee — before deciding to sign with the Seminoles.

Schafers will compete for the Titans once again this spring and is ranked as the No. 1 pole-vaulter in the state. An injury prevented Schafers from competing at state in the spring of 2015, so the area youth is focused on performing well at state this time around.

Former Laker named Rookie of the Week

Xeo Golding, a freshman basketball player at Lesley University who played his high-school ball for Windermere Prep, was named the New England Collegiate Conference’s Rookie of the Week Nov. 16.

In his collegiate debut Nov. 13 against Gordon College, Golding played 33 minutes and scored 24 points to lead all scorers. Golding finished 8-of-16 from the field and made 4-of-8 three-point attempts.

West Orange hoops alum earns honor

West Orange alum Quinton Forrest, a freshman basketball player at Bethune-Cookman University, was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Nov. 16.

Forrest, a guard, was recognized after shooting 80% from the floor and scoring 18 points in a win over Trinity College in the Wildcats’ opener.

B-CU is 2-1 so far this season and Forrest will return home to the Central Florida area with his teammates Dec. 22 to take on UCF.

Forrest also played for Windermere Prep.

Prium makes mark for Ocoee cross country

Legacy Charter junior Cole Prium, who runs cross country for Ocoee High because Legacy does not offer the sport, competed at the state championships Nov. 7 in Tallahassee.

He is the first boys runner in Ocoee’s program history to advance to state and is the holder of the program’s best time.
