Windermere Prep sophomore Lyndsey Huizenga placed fifth in the state in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2016 FHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships Nov. 11. Huizenga’s time of 23.78 was an improvement upon her 24.53 time in 2015 that earned her 12th place in the state.
After placing 12th at state last year, what was your goal this year?
I wanted to make top eight. It was very exciting. It was a goal that I wanted, because I really wanted to medal.
Where have you improved the most?
Probably in my overall strength. I’ve been working out with the strength trainer here at Windermere Prep, coach Kyle (Gilbert). Also, mentally, I’ve been able to focus in on my goals and figure out where I want to go.
Tell us a little about your swimming background.
I started swimming in sixth grade here (at Windermere Prep). I started doing club swimming in seventh grade. I think during eighth grade, going into ninth grade, that’s when I got really serious about it.
What would you like to study in college?
I think I want to go into criminology, mainly because I like watching the television shows, and that got me interested in it. I think it’s really cool.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up. Which are you looking more?
I like them both — Thanksgiving, because you get to eat a lot, and Christmas, I just love the spirit and the joy of Christmas.
What is the place you have traveled to that you enjoyed the most, and where is somewhere you are hoping to visit soon?
This last spring break I went to Costa Rica, and I loved it there. I’m trying to convince my mom this spring break to go on a cruise in the Mediterranean.
