In this photograph from 1957, future Winter Garden City Commissioner Bob Buchanan concentrates on a boy’s favorite activity: fishing. He’s pictured at the Gap Fishing Camp near Fishermen’s Paradise on Lake Apopka. Owned by the father of citrus processor Tom West, the Gap was one of many fishing camps that once lined the shores of Lake Apopka, a body of water that was once known as the “large-mouth bass capital of the world.”

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which seeks to preserve our heritage and architecture while creating new cultural experiences, is celebrating its third decade with the debut of its new History Research and Education Center.
