The Winter Park Wildcats are back in the win column after a 34-26 edging of University on Saturday. The win puts the Wildcats at 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in the district.

Four games into the season, Winter Park’s new quarterback appears to have finally found his groove, throwing for four touchdowns against the Cougars, amassing more than 200 yards in the air in the process.

Asiantii Woulard’s big air game kept the Wildcats constantly ahead of the Cougars, who traded scores with the Cats but never caught them after the first score of the game.

That score was a big one, with Woulard connecting with star receiver Dvario Montgomery for a 32-yard touchdown to open things up.

The Cougars did mount a comeback in the fourth quarter after the Wildcats had seemingly blown the game open. Winter Park was ahead 34-12 going into the fourth quarter before the Cougars launched into two long touchdown drives to catch up, but in the end they fell short.

The Wildcats head all the way to Freedom for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday. The Patriots (3-0) had a bye week last week after opening the season 3-0. The Patriots’ offense has proven tough to contain, averaging four touchdowns per game.

The Eagles are 2-1 after an ambitious start to the season. With two straight wins behind them, including a 14-6 squeaker against Oak Ridge last week, the Eagles are proving their defense is trumping offense.

Against Oak Ridge, quarterback J.B. Woodman again struggled in the air, connecting on only 5 of 17 pass attempts for 61 yards. John Altman was a workhorse on the ground, picking up 91 yards on 20 carries.

Coming up next the Eagles head to Winter Springs on Thursday, Oct. 6, but they’ll have a bye week in the meantime to recover. The Bears are 1-2 after their first win of the year against Lyman.
