As part of its mission, the Windermere Police Department Foundation, Inc. makes it a habit to help support families in the Windermere community with the use of donations they receive throughout the year. Since the organization was created two years ago, the foundation has raised about $75,000 and spent $40,000 on various charitable initiatives.

In honor of officer Robert German who was killed in the line of duty on March 22, 2014, the foundation has reguarly supported the families of both fallen and injured officers. They also have hosted DUI training and mental health seminars for police officers, and have donated money to children who’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

Most recently, the foundation purchased school supplies for families sending their kids to Windermere Elementary School.

"Even though it’s Windermere Elementary School ,they have still some kids there that are in need," said Robert Smith, the Windermere town manager. "Just because they go to Windermere doesn’t mean that they’re wealthy. So there are some children who need some help, and we went ahead and worked with the school to figure out what they needed and purchased those items."

To support the foundation’s cause, you can attend their fundraising events. The foundation will be holding its next event in sponsorship with Be The 1 Foundation August 27 at 5 p.m. at the Roper YMCA. The foundation will also be hosting a police-escorted motorcycle ride, I Care Ride 2016, on October 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone interested can visit their Facebook page for more details.
