+ Wilder named Merit Scholar

Legacy High School senior Rachel Wilder will receive a $2,500 college scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and be designated a National Merit Scholar.

This fall, she will attend the University of Central Florida, where she plans to double major in international and global studies and economics. She is the daughter of John and Taru Wilder of Winter Garden.

+ Dean’s list

Haile-Montana Di Tieri of Winter Garden made the dean’s list at Belmont University, in Nashville, Tenn., for the spring 2014 semester.

+ Local student earns bachelor’s

Claire Almond of Winter Garden graduated May 3 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Flagler College in St. Augustine. She was one of more than 350 Flagler seniors at the spring commencement ceremony at the St. Augustine Ampitheatre.

+ American Legion activities

The post building, located at 271 W. Plant St., Winter Garden, is open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and veterans are invited to drop by for coffee and conversation. A lunch menu is available, too.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

Bingo Nights are 6:30 p.m. Mondays and 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

The legion is looking for historical articles, pictures or memorabilia about Post 63. Anyone with items to donate or loan can call 407-656-6361.

The post has dry-chemical fire extinguishers and 3- by 5-foot America flags for $15. Proceeds benefit local and national charities.

+ Did you volunteer with the Winter Garden Fire Department?

The Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department is compiling a list of volunteer firefighters. Anyone who served as a fire volunteer (or knows someone who did) can contact Trena Waters at the department’s administration office, 407-877-5175, Ext. 2302, or by email at [email protected].

The department is looking for the following information: their full name and years of service, whether they were paid or unpaid, their titles or ranks, whether or not they retired from the department, where they are currently living and their contact information. The WGFRD would also like to collect their memories of working with the department, as well as photographs.

+ What to do in summer veggie garden

The Orange County Extension Education Center is holding a program on summer vegetable gardens on Thursday, June 12, from 6-7:30 p.m. It will take place at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N. Dillard St., Winter Garden.

Learn basic information on summer gardening and how to take advantage of the season. The cost is $5 per household for materials. Pre-register online at www.OCMGS.eventbrite.com.

+ Sponsor a Warrior jersey

The West Orange Warriors are getting new home-game uniforms for their 2014 high school football season, and the West Orange Quarterback Club is looking for companies or individuals to sponsor each of them. Sponsorships are $150.

The Quarterback Club spent $16,000 for two sets of 60 uniforms, consisting of gray pants and a royal blue jersey. The players’ helmets were reconditioned and will sport a different look, too.

+ See what’s parked at monthly car show

The Cruz-N-Car Show is held along West Plant Street on the third Saturday of each month from 6-9 p.m. There are always a variety of cars on display, including some vintage vehicles.

+ Bingo at Elks

The Winter Garden Elks Lodge offers bingo games on Thursdays at 6 p.m. The public is invited to participate. The Elks Lodge is at 700 Ninth St., Winter Garden.

+ Seniors invited to socialize

Senior Time is a program geared toward seniors, and it meets each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the West Orange Neighborhood Center for Families (Mildred Dixon Activity Center).

Participants can enjoy activities, exercises, games, reading time and snacks. The center is located at 303 S. West Crown Point Road, Winter Garden. For more information, call 407-905-5100.

+ Library hosts English Conversation class

The Adult Literacy League holds an English Conversation class Mondays at the Winter Garden Library, 805 E. Plant St. Class takes place from 6-8 p.m. To register, call 407-422-1540.

+ Help WGHF furnish new education center

Work on the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation’s new History Research and Education Center is progressing rapidly. To furnish the new building, the organization is in need of a few items. Anyone who would like to donate one or more of the following gently used items can call WGHF at 407-656-3244.

Needed are: two matching wooden desks; rolling desk chairs; large-screen, 60-inch wall-mounted television with computer interface; folding tables and chairs; small podium; refrigerator; microwave oven; and conference table with chairs.

+ City to discuss housing grants

Winter Garden city officials will host a community meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, June 9, at City Hall, 300 W. Plant St., to review and rank the applications received for the CDBG Housing Assistance grants.

+ Tourney to benefit students

The Westside Tech Foundation will host its 2014 West Open golf tournament on Monday, June 9, to support student scholarships and emergencies. The event will be held at the West Orange Country Club in Winter Garden, with registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m. and tee off at 1 p.m. Sponsorships are available. Golfers will receive a complimentary golf shirt, use of the driving range, barbecue lunch and door prizes. For more information, call 407-905-2000.

+ West Orange Recreation Center offers co-ed youth volleyball league

Orange County Parks’ West Orange Recreation Center, 309 S. West Crown Point Road, Winter Garden, is registering now for a summer co-ed youth volleyball league for ages 11-17.

League play is June 15 to Aug. 10, and the cost is $50 per person.

+ Rec center offers summer camps

The Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Center at West Orange, 309 S.
