Feb. 9 City Commission highlights

Mayor’s Report

• The Water & Wastewater Utilities Department was recognized as the recipient of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection 2014 Plant Operations Excellence Award.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes for Jan. 26, 2015, were approved.

• The Fiscal Year 2015 budget adjustment for GIS mapping and graphic arts equipment was approved.

• The interlocal agreement with Orange County for the Lake Killarney Sediment Inactivation Project was approved.

• The City Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2015, was approved to be canceled due to the Memorial Day holiday.

• The purchase, contracts and a formal solicitation was approved (for a complete list, please visit cityofwinterpark.org/ccpackets.)

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• The Sustainability Action Plan was approved.

• The city approved the issuance of a Notice of Disposal for Progress Point property located at 1150 N. Orange Ave.

• The proposal for Visioning Steering Committee members was approved with an amendment.

• The state legislative priorities were approved with an amendment.

Public Hearings

• The second reading of the ordinance amending portions of Chapter 102, Utilities, Article IV, Sewers and Sewage Disposal, as well as creating the Grease Management Ordinance, was approved.

• The request of Unicorp National Developments Inc. as outlined below was approved:

Conditional use approval to redevelop the former Mt. Vernon Inn property with a project to be called Lakeside Crossing of approximately 37,473 square feet of retail and restaurant space including a two-level parking deck and surface parking of approximately 317 spaces on the property at 110 S. Orlando Ave.

City receives 2014 Plant Operations Excellence Award

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has awarded the city of Winter Park the 2014 Plant Operations Excellence Award for its Magnolia Water Treatment Plant, a large community water system that serves more than 50,000 people. The award recognizes excellence in operation, maintenance, innovative treatment, waste reduction, pollution prevention, recycling, and other special achievements. The award was presented to one recipient in each drinking water and domestic wastewater category at the annual “Focus on Change Seminar.”

The city of Winter Park’s Magnolia Water Treatment Plant consistently provides citizens with the highest water quality possible. The city has made numerous upgrades to the plant over the past 10 years, resulting in a significant decrease of hydrogen sulfide and chlorine odor complaints.

The FDEP is the lead agency for environmental management and stewardship. It ensures the quality and quantity of Florida’s water resources. For more information regarding the FDEP, please visit dep.state.fl.us

Popcorn Flicks in the Park

On Thursday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. Popcorn Flicks will feature “The Philadelphia Story,” from the 1940s, presented by the city of Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency and produced by the Enzian Theater. This film series features classic films for the whole family to enjoy. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket, a picnic or snacks, along with family and friends! Free popcorn is available for everyone. For more information, please call 407-629-0054.

City blood drive

On Monday, Feb. 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Florida Blood Centers (OneBlood), will be hosting a blood drive just outside City Hall located at 401 S. Park Ave. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood. To donate blood, you must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 pounds, and be in good health. All donors must bring photo ID. For more information, please call 407-599-3506. Please donate blood. The city appreciates your lifesaving efforts. Thank you for doing your part to help OneBlood.
