My upcoming CoffeeTalk

I will be hosting my CoffeeTalk Thursday, Nov. 3, at 8 a.m., at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. Now in its 11th season, CoffeeTalk has become the place for citizens that have “a latte beans to grind” or simply to “espresso their thoughts.” The purpose of CoffeeTalk is to give citizens the opportunity to talk to their city leaders in a more casual, informal environment, and avoid the stage fright that is often experienced at large meetings. Please make plans to join me for a cup of conversation and great coffee provided by Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen.

New Waste Pro cart delivery and return timeline

Waste Pro is in the process of delivering new solid waste and recycle carts to city residents according to the following schedule:

• New solid waste and recycle carts were delivered by Nov. 1.

• Residents can now use new carts on the first regularly scheduled pickup day.

• Old solid waste carts and recycle bins should be left curbside for pickup by Waste Pro on regularly scheduled recycle days.

• As a courtesy, residents may keep one of the old solid waste carts for yard waste.

• Yard waste stickers were mailed to residents in mid-October and should be placed on the lid of the old cart so it is only used for yard waste.

— Only one yard waste sticker is issued per household and the sticker is not replaceable.

• By default, residents were scheduled to receive a standard 96-gallon solid waste cart and a 64-gallon recycle cart, with the exception to those that specifically requested a larger 96-gallon recycle cart. However, due to a manufacturing error, all residents were delivered a 96-gallon recycle cart and now have two options:

  1. Keep the upgraded 96-gallon cart to take advantage of the additional recycling opportunities.

  2. Request a smaller 64-gallon recycle cart by:

a. Visiting the city’s website at cityofwinterpark.org and selecting the Waste Pro button. Then click “Requests” > input your information > check the “Exchange 96 Gal Recycle Cart for 64 Gal” box.

b. Calling Waste Pro Customer Service at 407-774-0800.

The replacement of your recycle cart can take up to three to four weeks.

Sixth annual Veterans Day Celebration

On Friday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m., the city of Winter Park will present its sixth annual Veterans Day Celebration “Honoring Winter Park Heroes.” This event will be held in honor of all of the veterans of Winter Park at the Winter Park Community Center Ruby Ball Amphitheatre located at 721 W. New England Ave. The program will include remarks by guest speaker Lt. Col. Mark E. Green, Inspector General for the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).

The city calls all veterans that have served in any military campaign or branch in honor of our nation’s freedom. This event pays tribute to their dedicated service to our country, and the community is invited to join us in honoring these distinguished men and women.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the VFW Post 2093 Community Band will be entertaining guests as they visit with organizations and services that offer resources specifically for veteran needs. At 10 a.m., the official program will begin with musical tributes, anecdotal speakers including Lt. Col. Green, and recognition of veterans according to the various military branches served.

The Veterans Day Celebration continues at the newly renovated, nine-hole Winter Park Golf Course, located at 761 Old England Ave., with a Veterans Golf Play Day. Tee times begin at 12:30 p.m. and veterans play for free. Reserve your tee time for a patriotic round of golf by Monday, Nov. 7, at 407-599-3419.

The city of Winter Park is pleased to announce the 2016 Fall Cleanup during the month of November is just in time for the holiday season. This large-item pickup service will provide a ‘bonus’ day on which Waste Pro, the city’s solid waste service provider, will pick up old furniture, broken appliances, and other bulky items.

To take advantage of this convenient service, residents must place their items curbside after 5 p.m. on the evening before their second scheduled garbage and trash pickup day on their designated cleanup week. If you live north of the Fairbanks/Aloma avenues corridor, your bonus pick-up day will be Thursday, Nov. 3, or Friday, Nov. 4. If you live south of the Fairbanks/Aloma avenues corridor, your bonus pick-up day will be Thursday, Nov. 10, or Friday, Nov. 11.

Please note: Hazardous waste, electronics and yard waste are not included in the Fall Cleanup.
