Aug. 12 City Commission meeting

There will be a City Commission meeting Monday, Aug. 12, at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few topics of interest. Please visit cityofwinterpark.org for the most current agenda:

Mayor’s Report

• Check presentation of $25,000 from the Winter Park Health Foundation for city’s new shuttle bus.

• Board appointments for the Code Enforcement Board and Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals.

Citizens Budget Comments

Consent Agenda

• Approve the minutes of 7/22/13.

• Approve purchases and contracts (for a complete listing, visit cityofwinterpark.org/ccpackets).

• Authorize the Mayor to execute the power supply and interconnection agreements with the Orlando Utilities Commission; and to execute agreements with Florida Power & Light Company.

• Confirm the appointment of Dori Stone as director of Planning & Community Development (Planning and Economic Development/CRA departments to be consolidated into one unified department).

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• Comparison report: Winter Park Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places.

• Discussion of proposed public/private partnership for redevelopment of Mt. Vernon Hotel site.

Public hearings

• Second reading of the ordinance repealing obsolete provisions and amending Chapter 98, Traffic and Vehicles, Article VI, Traffic Light Safety Act, of the city code to implement Chapter 2013-160, Laws of Florida; providing for local hearing officer consistent with general law.

• Second reading of the ordinance amending Section 2-107(e), Administrative Fines; Costs of Repair; Liens, of Chapter 2, Administration, repealing the clause declaring that code enforcement liens take priority over other liens.

• Red light camera program:

  • Resolution – appointing a hearing officer

  • Resolution – appointing a clerk to the local hearing officer

  • Resolution – setting the amount of municipal costs for infractions

• Police and fire pension ordinances to comply with recent changes to the Internal Revenue Code relating to tax-qualified pension plans:

  • First reading of the ordinance amending the Firefighters’ Pension Plan

  • First reading of the ordinance amending the Police Officers’ Pension Plan

New England Avenue streetscape project

On Aug. 7, construction of the roadway section from Alexander Place to Chase Avenue/Fairbanks Avenue began. Completion is anticipated by Friday, Sept. 20, barring inclement weather or unforeseen emergencies/circumstances.

This roadway (New England Avenue, Interlachen Avenue to Chase Avenue) will remain closed to thru traffic – local traffic only. Total road closure will be necessary for the roadway section from Alexander to Chase Avenue/Fairbanks Avenue. The roadway section from Interlachen Avenue east to Alexander Place will reopen to thru traffic only.

Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday thru Friday and Saturday, if necessary. Every effort will be made to keep the inconvenience to a minimum. As always, your patience and cooperation are appreciated.

Please join Mayor Ken Bradley at CoffeeTalk scheduled in conjunction with the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce’s Good Morning Winter Park program on Friday, Aug. 9, at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. Networking begins at 7:45 a.m., and CoffeeTalk will begin at 8 a.m.

Register now for the Education Update

On Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7:45 a.m., the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and city of Winter Park will host an Education Update presented by Rollins College Hamilton Holt School, at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave.

The event will explore “From Learning to Working: How Winter Park Creates a Strong Workforce” via panel discussion moderated by WKMG Local 6 news anchor Lauren Rowe. Panelists for the breakfast event include Dr. Barbara Jenkins, superintendent, Orange County Public Schools; Dr. David S. Richard, dean, Rollins College Hamilton Holt School; Michael O’Donnell, President/CEO, Ruth’s Hospitality Group Inc.; and Dr. Sandra Lyn Jewell, senior director, Winter Park Tech. Throughout the morning panelists will highlight accomplishments, celebrate collaborations and examine how educators and business leaders are partnering to meet future workforce needs.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring supplies to the event for A Gift For Teaching’s 15th Birthday Back-to-School Drive.

Event registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., followed by breakfast and program at 8 a.m. Admission is $25 in advance for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. Corporate tables are also available. Reservations are required by Friday, Aug. 16, and can be made by calling 407-644-8281 or visiting winterpark.org
