City Commission meeting highlights

There was a City Commission meeting held Feb. 25 at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few highlights from that meeting:

Mayor’s Report

• Grant Barker, Patrick Burns, Samuel Green and Vincent Falbo were recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout as the city declared Feb. 25 Eagle Scout Day in Winter Park. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony will be held Saturday, March 2, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes of 2/11/13 were approved.

• The various purchases and contracts were approved.

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• City staff was approved to work with High Performance Sports Management Inc. to negotiate a contract for tennis management services at Azalea Lane.

• The Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2013, was canceled due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

Public Hearings

• The request of Lakeside Winter Park, LLC, for Conditional Use approval to construct approximately 35,500 square feet of retail, restaurant and office building space on the properties at 111 and 131 N. Orlando Ave. was approved with amendments.

• The request of Mr. & Mrs. Gavin Ford for Conditional Use Approval to construct a tennis court on the property at 1551 Via Tuscany was approved.

• The first reading of the ordinance to vacate and abandon the utility easement at 1141 Via Capri was approved.

• Request of the Sydgan Corporation:

• The first reading of the ordinance to amend the Comprehensive Plan future land use map to change the future land use designation of single family residential to low-density residential on the property at 250 W. Lyman Ave. was approved.

• The first reading of the ordinance to change the official zoning map-zoning designation of single family (r-1a) district to low-density residential (r-2) district on the property at 250 W. Lyman Ave. was approved.

• Equalization Board Hearing:

• The resolution declaring and confirming that the city is to fund capital improvements to underground electric/CATV (BHN) facilities along Via Salerno/Via Capri was approved.

A little over a week left to submit parking survey

Help the city develop effective parking strategies to accommodate the demand for downtown parking by participating in the city’s Downtown Parking Survey at cityofwinterpark.org/ParkingSurveys between now and Friday, March 8.

Upon accessing the link, you will be able to select a survey from one of these four categories that best describes your role in downtown:

  1. Employee; 2. Business owner; 3. Resident; 4.Visitor

Participation will help the city maximize parking opportunities that can enhance the overall downtown experience. Thank you for participating in the parking survey and providing valuable feedback.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The city of Winter Park and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee are proud to present the 34th annual Winter Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in downtown Winter Park. Gather your family and friends and wear some green to enjoy the only St. Patrick’s Day parade in Central Florida. The parade will begin at the Winter Park Country Club and continue south down Park Avenue to Lyman Avenue. More than 75 units will participate. The celebration will also feature Irish music and step dancing at the main stage in Central Park with demonstrations by the Tir Na Greine School of Irish Dance and the Watters School of Irish Dancing. Irish music will be provided by the Tommy Doyle Band.

This celebration is made possible by the generous support of event sponsors including the city of Winter Park’s Community Redevelopment Agency, Fiddler’s Green Irish Pub and Eatery, the Irish American Cultural Society of Central Florida, and Florida Distributors Company.

Park Avenue closed for St. Patrick’s Day Parade

For the parade, Park Avenue will be closed to traffic from Webster to Comstock avenues from noon until 4 p.m. Side streets will also be closed at the Park Avenue intersections along the parade route beginning at 1:30 p.m. In addition, New York Avenue will be closed between Canton and Webster avenues for parade staging.

Please make note of these road closures prior to traveling around downtown Winter Park on Sunday, March 3. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and continued support of Winter Park’s community events.

Fifth annual “Bike From Park to Park”

On Friday, March 22, at 8 a.m. in Central Park West Meadow located at 150 N. New York Ave., the city’s Pedestrian & Bicycle Advisory Board and Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate “Florida Bike Month” and “Bike to Work Day.” This will be honored with a bicycle ride through downtown Winter Park including historic Hannibal Square.
