Golf course is open to play 9!

Oct. 1 marked the official grand reopening of the newly renovated Winter Park Golf Course. What was once a flat course now offers more challenges to our golfers’ game such as sand traps, contours, undulations, varying elevations, new placement of tee boxes and greens now three times larger!

The ceremony opened with the entrance of a bagpiper from Hole #1, remarks from Mayor Steve Leary and course designers, and a very special tribute to honor the life of golf legend Arnold Palmer was held with a moment of silence and proclamation presentation. Mayor Leary hit the first tee to kick off the many rounds of golf that will be played on the new WP9.

Swearing-in ceremony for new police chief

On Monday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. the city of Winter Park will hold a swearing-in ceremony for its new police chief, Michael Deal. This ceremony is open to the public and will be held at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave.

Michael Deal’s most recent service as chief of police in Atlantic Beach and his 33 years of service for Altamonte Springs is impressive, respected, and admirable. We were looking for an individual that had the experience, expertise, confidence and ability to continue to keep our city safe, and we found that in Deal. We are excited about the advancements he will make in our agency and for our community.

Former Police Chief Brett Railey celebrated his retirement after nine years as chief and a total of 35 years of service with the police department. Upon learning of his retirement, the city advertised the police chief position in several state and national publications. This search resulted in approximately 80 applicants responding from across the country. The City Commission confirmed Michael Deal’s appointment as the new police chief at its Sept. 12 meeting.
