Martin Luther King Jr. Park officially dedicated

On Jan. 21, Mayor Kenneth W. Bradley, members of the City Commission, representatives of the Martin Luther King Jr. Task Force, and more than 50 attendees gathered to celebrate the official dedication of at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the corner of Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard.

At that event, the community honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and encouraged his great dream by celebrating the values of peace and equality, acceptance and tolerance, and justice and compassion.

A memorial brick was placed at the site and beginning next month, the community will have an opportunity to purchase memorial bricks from the Parks & Recreation Department to honor their friends, family and loved ones at this place of reflection and remembrance. Funds raised by the brick sales will help develop the park into the conceptual plans that depict a “circle of unity.” The six circles will symbolize words that encapsulate Dr. King’s vision including hope, dream, righteousness, peace, love and justice.

Dr. King once said, “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” As the park develops, an apple tree in honor of Dr. King, and other fruit trees will be planted to remind us always of his work and dedication for civil rights, justice and equality.

For more information on how to purchase a MLK Jr. Park memorial brick, please call 407-599-3334.
