Winter Park Golf Course opens this Saturday

It’s time to play 9! The newly renovated Winter Park Golf Course has quickly become one of the rarest 9-hole golf courses in the country. The city is ready to celebrate its grand reopening Saturday, Oct. 1, with an official ribbon cutting at 8 a.m.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting, the city will host a VIP Invitational Tournament and Member Sneak Peek & Play. For kids and families, the city will offer its first-ever Family Ice Cream on the Green, at 2 p.m., where they can eat all the ice cream their hearts and bellies desire, or until it’s all gone, whichever comes first. It will definitely be warm outside, so ice cream is always a fun way to cool down. Kids can also enter in the Name the Putting Course contest where one lucky family will win two tickets to Universal Studios Florida.

In honor of the recent passing of golf legend Arnold Palmer, the city will have a moment of silence during its ceremony and encourages the public to join Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation, established by Arnold Palmer that provides grants and financial support to organizations that make an impact in children and youth development, health and wellness, and community and environment. Donations can be made at arniesarmy.org

On Sunday, Oct. 2, at 7 a.m., the course opens to the public with tee time bookings beginning Thursday, Sept. 29. All golfers will be eligible to enter a raffle for a Scotty Cameron Putter, with the lucky winner to be selected at 5 p.m.

What was once a flat course is now completely renovated to offer more challenges to our golfers’ game. Players will see:

• Sand traps, contours, undulations, and varying elevations.

• Tee boxes moved to line the player down the fairway, aiming their drive away from the roads and moving vehicles.

• Greens now three times larger offering new pin placement opportunities.

The golf course was designed with the avid player in mind, but is just as perfect for the beginner as a great place to learn the game, especially on the new putting course that is now a part of the new golf experience.

The city is updating the adopted 2009 Comprehensive Plan and will be hosting a community workshop to discuss the transportation element of the plan, Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Commission Chambers located on the second floor of City Hall at 401 S. Park Ave.
