July 9 City Commission meeting highlights

There was a City Commission meeting July 9. Below are a few highlights of decisions made:

Non-action items

An update was given regarding the “Art on the Green 2012” sculpture exhibition.

The May 2012 Financial Report was presented and accepted.

The city manager presented the Fiscal Year 2013 proposed budget. A copy of the document can be found on the city’s official website at cityofwinterpark.org under Info at Your Fingertips > Budget documents.

Consent Agenda

The minutes of June 25 were approved.

The following decisions were made on the bids and change order:

Categories 1, 2, 3 and 5 printing and mailing services were awarded to Designers’ Press Inc., and the mayor was authorized to execute the contract.

Category 4 printing & mailing services was awarded to International Press, and the mayor was authorized to execute the contract.

Change Order #1 Fairbanks Avenue Roadway & Wastewater Systems Improvements Project was awarded to Masci General Contractor Inc.

Action items requiring discussion

The 90-day plan was presented and accepted.

A full copy of the July 9 City Commission minutes will be available at cityofwinterpark.org the week of July 23, pending approval by the City Commission.

CoffeeTalk with city manager

Please join me for a cup of coffee Thursday, July 19, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. for my annual CoffeeTalk gathering. This is the city’s seventh year in holding these annual CoffeeTalk sessions for residents that have a latte on their minds or some beans to grind.

This is your opportunity to talk with me in an informal environment and ask any questions related to city business. Special thanks to Palmano’s Café, Coffee & Wine Bar for donating the coffee. Hope to see you there!

Popcorn Flicks in Central Park

"The Great Muppet Caper" will be presented by the city of Winter Park and Enzian Theater Thursday, July 12, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., in Central Park in downtown Winter Park. Bring your blanket or chair to enjoy the free movie under the stars in Central Park. Free popcorn for everyone. Rain date will be Thursday, July 26. How much electricity is that?

If you want to know how much electricity your new flat-screen TV, refrigerator or even nightstand lamp uses, check out an electric usage monitor from the Winter Park Public Library to find out. The library is located at 460 E. New England Ave. and is open:

Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On the home page of the city’s website is a button called “Ask Winter Park.” If you ever have any city-related questions and aren’t sure who to ask, this is the perfect place for you to get your questions answered. Whether it is a road paving project, a code enforcement issue or simply a random question about any area of our city, “Ask Winter Park” will direct your question to the appropriate city department for response. Log on to cityofwinterpark.org and click on the “Ask Winter Park” button to get all your city-related questions answered.

City website is mobile

Just a reminder, when a desktop computer is not available, the city’s website has a mobile-friendly version. When accessing cityofwinterpark.org from your mobile device, you will automatically be redirected to the city’s mobile site and still be able to find vital information as if you were accessing from your desktop. As long as you have your mobile device with Wi-Fi, city information is always at your fingertips.

The Communications Department is continually looking for new ways to share the city’s message and is using the advancements in technology to enhance its communications efforts. We have established a strong presence on Facebook® with more than 2,000 fans and Twitter® with more than 1,300 followers, and both are growing daily. In May, we entered into the video world of social media by posting our Webisodes on Vimeo®, a “leading video sharing site that provides the easiest way for people to host and share their videos in high quality.” We are excited to be a part of this video-sharing experience and happy to add Vimeo to our growing list of communication tools.
