Dispose of your household hazardous waste

The city, in partnership with Waste Pro for household hazardous waste, and A1 Assets Inc. for e-waste, will be offering household hazardous waste disposal for all city residents Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Compound located at 1409 Howell Branch Road. The following items will be accepted:

• Antifreeze, fertilizers, pesticides, gasoline, household chemicals, non-alkaline batteries (regular alkaline batteries can go in trash), oil-based paint (wet or dry), paint thinners, pool chemicals, propane tanks, tires (max. four), used engine oil, used motor oil, wet latex paint (dry latex paint is not hazardous waste and can go in trash), and e-waste (computers, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, FAX machines, CD players and stereos).

Here are some helpful tips for a quick and safe drop-off:

 Bring proof of city residency (driver’s license or utility bill statement).

 Keep all hazardous waste materials in original containers with original labeling (unknown items will not be accepted).

 Items delivered before 8 a.m. or after noon will not be accepted.

 This drop off is residential only. No contractors, please.

 Drugs and prescription medications go to the Prescription Reclamation Station located at the Public Safety Facility (500 N. Virginia Ave., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday).

CoffeeTalk with Commissioner Carolyn Cooper

CoffeeTalk featuring Commissioner Cooper will be held Thursday, Sept. 15, at 8 a.m., at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. Now in its 11th season, CoffeeTalk has become the place for citizens that have “a latte beans to grind” or simply to “espresso their thoughts.” The purpose of CoffeeTalk is to give citizens the opportunity to talk to their city leaders in a more casual, informal environment, and avoid the stage fright that is often experienced at large meetings. Please make plans to join Commissioner Cooper for a cup of conversation and great coffee provided by Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen.
