Lots of Pokémon ‘go’ to Winter Park

Since the launch of “Pokémon Go” July 6, more and more people have been venturing outside desperately looking for Pokémon to virtually appear in the real world on their phone. Kids and adults of all ages are creating new Poké bonds with other “Pokémon Go” trainers.

Downtown Winter Park has become a popular destination for catching these popular little guys. These mystical creatures are found all over the Winter Park Train Station, at many of the restaurants and stores and if you’re on the lookout for Pikachu, he’s been known to show up on Saturdays at the Winter Park Farmers Market.

As with any new activity, Pokémon trainers need to keep safety in mind.

 Always be aware of our surroundings, even if it means giving up a Pokémon or two.

 Always travel in groups.

 Look past the screen for any dangerous obstacles.

 If you are unsure of the area’s safety do not go there.

You can’t level up if you are laid up in a hospital bed. Catch them but be safe!

Spray ground temporarily closed

The Hannibal Square Spray Ground is temporarily closed for repairs. We know it's hot out there, so to cool off, please consider signing up for a pool membership at the Winter Park Community Center located right by the spray ground. It's a zero-depth pool with fun water features — great for little ones this summer season! While you’re there, you can sign up for our swim classes as well. With so many bodies of water surrounding our state from oceans to lakes to swimming pools, learning how to swim is important for safety and recreational purposes. Statistics show:

• Approximately 3,600 people die each year in the United States from drowning

• One in four fatal drowning victims are children 14 and younger

• Florida had the second highest drowning rate in the nation for the 1- to 14-year-old age group with a drowning rate of 2.54 per 100,000 population

• Florida loses more children under age 5 to drowning than any other state

The following locations offer lessons and events to help keep you and your family both safe and entertained this summer:

Winter Park Community Center Pool, 721 W. New England Ave.

• Private, semi-private and group instruction swim lessons offered

• Zero-depth pool entry allows complete ADA accessibility as well as providing a very shallow area for tiny tots to enjoy

• Swim lanes for all levels, mid-depth flat area for water aerobics and swim classes

• Parties celebrating 4th of July, “Old School” theme, luaus and more

• To register or for more information, please call 407-643-1650.

Cady Way Pool 2525 Cady Way

• Swim lessons

• Family, adult, senior and teen memberships

• Chill-N-Grills and Dive-In movies

CoffeeTalk with Commissioner Greg Seidel

CoffeeTalk featuring Commissioner Seidel will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, at 8 a.m., at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. Now in its 11th season, CoffeeTalk has become the place for citizens that have “a latte beans to grind” or simply to “espresso their thoughts.” The purpose of CoffeeTalk is to give citizens the opportunity to talk to their city leaders in a more casual, informal environment, and avoid the stage fright that is often experienced at large meetings. Please make plans to join Commissioner Seidel for a cup of conversation and great coffee provided by Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen.
