March 28 Commission meeting highlights

There was a City Commission meeting held on Monday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few highlights of decisions made:

Mayor’s report:

The appointment of Mr. Frank Baker Jr. was confirmed to the Hannibal Square Community Land Trust Inc. Board of Directors.

Non-action items:

The financial report was presented and accepted.

Consent agenda:

• The minutes of March 14 were approved with minor modifications.

• The placement of one sign and one banner for a 30-day period from May 1-30 for the “Cool Camaro Sweepstakes” special event at Federal Trust Bank located at 1500 Lee Road was approved.

• The agreement with Lynx on the bus shelter at the former Pittsburgh Glass (Floyd’s 99) on Orange Avenue was approved.

• The 2010-2011 Agreement between the city of Winter Park and Teamsters Local Union No. 385 was ratified.

• IFB-13-2011 was awarded to HD Supply Waterworks for the purchase of 12” HDPE pipe for the West Fairbanks Water Main Replacement Project.

• IFB-8-2011 was awarded to FitRev Inc. for the purchase of fitness equipment for the new Community Center fitness center and PR 146386 was approved for the purchase.

• Various purchases and contracts were approved (for a complete list of purchases and contracts, access the Commission Agenda Packet at www.cityofwinterpark.org > Government > City Commission > Agenda Packets).

Action items requiring discussion:

After a discussion regarding the scheduling of future work sessions, it was decided to call them only on an as-needed basis.

Public hearings:

• The first reading of the ordinance regulating the sale of metals to secondary metal recyclers was approved.

• The first reading of the ordinance repealing Fleet Peeples Park fees was approved.

• The first reading of the ordinance repealing City Commissioner salary increases was approved.

• Fairbanks public input session:

As part of this meeting, the City Commission invited members of the public to share their comments and concerns regarding the Fairbanks Improvement Project. After extensive discussion, the City Commission approved the repaving and sewer installation of the project. However, they did not approve the construction of the proposed medians. Staff was asked to provide new cost estimates based upon this decision.

Cities to celebrate completion of Lake Baldwin Trail

On Thursday, March 31, at 10 a.m., the cities of Winter Park and Orlando will hold an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Lake Baldwin Trail. Mayor Ken Bradley, Orlando District 3 City Commissioner Robert Stuart, and other elected officials will be in attendance at the event that will take place near the walkway just south of the main entrance to Fleet Peeples Park at 2000 S. Lakemont Ave.

Recent sidewalk installations and improvements to connect the Winter Park and Orlando sections of the trail now provide a continuous 2.7-mile walkway around Lake Baldwin and Fleet Peeples Park. The trail provides users with a safe and picturesque environment to enjoy many of the fine attributes of both cities including Lake Baldwin Park, Harbor Park, Blue Jacket Park, Orlando Veteran’s Memorial Park and Fleet Peeples Park. These parks complete a 195-acre public park system that encircles the property, once known as the Orlando Naval Training Center.

City to host public meeting for downtown business district brand identity

The city of Winter Park will host a public meeting on Friday, April 1, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. The purpose of the meeting is to gather input to assist in developing a “brand identity” for Winter Park’s Central Business District. All interested residents and local business owners are invited to attend as participation from members of the community is critically important to this process.

The city of Winter Park’s Economic Development/CRA Department and Engauge, one of the nation’s largest independent advertising agencies contracted to assist in the brand identity process, will lead the meeting. Participants will be encouraged to offer input regarding what they believe to be the essence of Winter Park and the city’s Central Business District by expressing verbally in their own words, visually in terms of colors and styles, and emotionally in the form of feelings evoked. Attendees will be limited to a maximum of three minutes and are asked to please come prepared to share input.

City Commission work session

There will be a City Commission work session held on Monday, April 4, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in City Hall Commission Chambers to discuss Plan the Possibilities as it relates to city facilities.

The public is invited to attend. However, no public comment will be taken.

Students join together in the spirit of unity to plant trees for peace

The city of Winter Park and the Multifaith Education Project are proud to announce the eighth annual Trees For Peace Interfaith Tree Planting Project on Tuesday, April 12, at Fleet Peeples Park located at 2000 S. Lakemont Ave. Winter Park Mayor Kenneth W. Bradley will begin the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. and the program will be led by Louise Franklin Sheehy, director of the Multifaith Education Project.

More than 125 Christian, Jewish and Muslim students and faculty, representing The Geneva Christian School, The Jewish Academy and The Leaders Preparatory School, will join together to plant trees for peace. In recognition of their commitment to work together in the spirit of unity, the students will plant three trees and bless them in traditional manner according to each faith. They will then celebrate the occasion with a picnic on the lawn of Fleet Peeples Park along the shore of Lake Baldwin. The city of Winter Park’s Forestry Division will generously donate three, 30-gallon trees including one red bud, one dogwood and one chickasaw plum that will serve as symbols of students working for peace for generations to come.

The “Trees for Peace” project is also dedicated to teaching students about being “stewards of the earth” by learning lessons about environmental responsibility from each faith and sharing them with one another. Special thanks to Keep Winter Park Beautiful for helping to make this event possible.

Run for the Trees

In honor of National Arbor Day, the city of Winter Park will proudly host the 19th annual Jeannette Genius McKean “Run for the Trees” on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 a.m. This annual 5K 3.1 mile run/walk will begin at Showalter Field, located at 2525 Cady Way, and finish on beautiful Genius Drive, which is open to the public only once a year for this magnificent event. Each “Run for the Trees” race participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt as well as a young tree to plant at a location of their choice.

Funds raised from the event will support the Winter Park Tree Replacement Fund. Sponsorship opportunities are another great way to help the Winter Park Tree Replacement Fund accomplish the goal of refurbishing the lush tree canopies and providing a more beautiful environment for generations to come.
