JAN 10 CITY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The City Commission met on Jan. 10 at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few highlights of the major decisions that were made.

CONSENT AGENDA:

• The minutes of 11/22/10 and 12/13/2010 were approved.

• The Neighborhood Council matching grant requests who met the criteria for funding were approved as follows: Timberlane Shores $4,000; Orwin Manor $325; and Quail Hollow Homeowners Association $3,300.

• The Ethics Board work plan was tabled for a future City Commission work session (date TBD).

• Various purchases and contracts were approved (for a complete list of purchases and contracts, access the Commission Agenda Packet at www.cityofwinterpark.org > Government > City Commission > Agenda Packets).

ACTION ITEMS REQUIRING DISCUSSION:

• The extension of the Tennis Center Management Contract for the Winter Park Tennis Center with High Performance Sports Management, Inc., for an additional 12-month period was approved with an amendment and modifications.

PUBLIC HEARINGS:

• The second reading of the ordinance to extend the deadline for the de-annexation of the parcels involved in the Ravaudage project (Dan Bellows) was tabled for the 1/24/11 City Commission meeting.

• First reading of the ordinance to vacate utility easement at 1211 College Point was tabled.

• First reading of the ordinance relating to animal control and penalties; authorizing a fee for entry into the dog park at Fleet Peeples Park; and providing for violations was approved with an amendment.

WINTER PARK TO HOST TOWN MEETING

The Winter Park City Commission will host a Town Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center located at 1050 West Morse Boulevard. Following a brief welcome by Mayor Kenneth W. Bradley and City Manager Randy Knight, attendees will have the opportunity to ask the City Commission questions during an open Q & A session.

In preparation for the Town Meeting residents may review the city’s Strategic Plan via the city’s official Web site at www.cityofwinterpark.org > Info at Your Fingertips > Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan outlines the specific initiatives the city has identified as its top priorities and serves as a guideline for the city in making decisions.

Those unable to attend the Town Meeting may submit comments and/or ask questions prior to the meeting via the following methods:

TOWN MEETING GUIDELINES

Below are the guidelines that will be administered at the Town Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 13:

• Attendees will need to fill out a yellow “Request to Speak Form” and submit to city staff prior to speaking.

• Attendees will use the microphone in the center aisle to ask questions.

• Attendees are free to approach microphone in an orderly fashion at the completion of each question.

• Questions are to be directed to the City Commission as a whole and not to an individual City Commissioner.

• The City Commission has the discretion to move on from topics that have already been covered by previous speakers.

• To be respectful of time, questions must be asked within a three-minute time limit.

• Personal, slanderous or impertinent remarks are not permitted.

• Attendees are to be respectful of each other and participants of the meeting.

• First priority will be given to city residents, and if time permits, non-city residents will have an opportunity to address the City Commission.

• For those who prefer to submit their questions in writing, questions can also be submitted during the Town Meeting to city staff.

• For those unable to attend, questions/comments can be submitted to the city 24 hours prior to the meeting via e-mail at [email protected].

DINNER ON THE AVENUE SOLD OUT!

The City of Winter Park’s 10th annual Dinner on the Avenue scheduled for Saturday, April 16, is officially SOLD OUT! After receiving an overwhelming response, 152 tables sold in a record-breaking five working days since they originally went on sale on Jan. 3. Over 1,200 patrons will experience the fun and excitement of this annual event, which has become Winter Park’s social event of the year.

9th ANNUAL UNITY HERITAGE FESTIVAL

The City of Winter Park is proud to present the 9th annual Unity Heritage Festival on Sunday, Jan. 16, and Monday, Jan. 17. The annual community festival will promote family history and raise funds for the Educational Fulfillment Fund for local economically disadvantaged youth.

The festival begins on Sunday, Jan. 16, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Shady Park in Hannibal Square located at the intersection of Pennsylvania and New England avenues. Special activities will include children’s games, career booths, food and retail vendors, special entertainment by various gospel artists, health information by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Iota Omega Chapter and the presentation of the annual Heritage Award. Free family genealogy research will be provided by specialists from the Hannibal Square Heritage Center Family History Library, which provides services to the general public throughout the year and specializes in family history of West Winter Park residents.

The heritage festival continues in Shady Park on Monday, Jan. 17, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Join Mayor Ken Bradley and Winter Park city officials at 10 a.m. for a special Martin Luther King, Jr., Symbolic Program, including the Feature Family Presentation which will be presented to the Simpson family. Exciting events and activities will continue throughout the day including food and musical entertainment by The Phillip Sisters and C.L. West & Touch of Class Band.
