JUNE 14 CITY COMMISSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The City Commission met on June 14 at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few highlights of the major decisions that were made:

MAYOR'S REPORT:

-The mayor issued a proclamation declaring the month of July 2010 Recreation & Parks Month.

-More city board appointments were made with only a few vacancies left to be appointed.

CITY ATTORNEY REPORT:

-A shade meeting was requested and scheduled pursuant to Section 268.01(8) to discuss the lawsuit titled Canin Associates, Inc., vs. the City of Winter Park.

-An update was given on the city's commuter rail negotiations regarding the interlocal agreement and potential modifications that could be made. The city attorney will draft language based upon the meeting and will provide it to the city manager and City Commission for review prior to sending to Orange County for their consideration.

CONSENT AGENDA:

-The minutes of the May 24 City Commission meeting were approved.

-The recommendations regarding city building regulations on inactive construction sites and preparation of an ordinance with the proposed changes for adoption was approved.

-The proposed retainer arrangement with Brown, Garganese, Weiss & D'Agresta, P.A., was approved with minor modifications.

ACTION ITEMS REQUIRING DISCUSSION:

-The Request for Proposal for the state office building was discussed and approved for release with suggested modifications from the City Commission. Staff will prepare the RFP for distribution expected at the end of June.

PUBLIC HEARINGS:

-The second reading of the ordinance to vacate a utility easement at 1741 Golfside Drive was approved.

-The resolution calling for a public hearing to discuss undergrounding of electric/CATV facilities to be paid in part by special assessments levied against properties of Golfview Terrace and North Park Avenue was approved.

-The resolution calling for a public hearing to discuss undergrounding of electric/CATV facilities to be paid in part by special assessments levied against properties of Granville Drive and Williams Drive was approved.

-The resolution refunding of the Park Avenue Area Improvement Revenue Bonds, Series 1998 was approved.

-The resolution requesting the transfer of Granada right-of-way to Florida Department of Transportation was approved.

-The first reading of the ordinance adopting the annual update to the Capital Improvement Element (CIE) to incorporate the updated five-year capital improvements plan to the Comprehensive Plan was approved.

CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY IN CENTRAL PARK

The city of Winter Park will present their annual Olde Fashioned 4th of July Celebration on Saturday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Central Park. Wear your red, white and blue, pack a picnic lunch (no hot dogs or food will be given away this year), bring a blanket or beach chair, and gather with family and friends to enjoy this Winter Park tradition.

The annual celebration will feature live patriotic music performed by the Bach Festival Brass Band and the Bach Festival Choir, horse-drawn wagon rides, the Orlando Cloggers, the Rockin' Roadster Road Show, and much more! Children's activities will include the annual bicycle parade at 9 a.m. from City Hall to Central Park, as well as fun games and inflatables.

Families and friends are also invited to stroll along Park Avenue and Hannibal Square to find bargains at the sidewalk sales and dine at the wide selection of eateries. In addition, the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will present their Independence Day Open House. The museum, which is home to the world's most comprehensive collection of work by American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, will provide free admission to its galleries from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
